But when what started as an act begins to shift into something more, it might take a village to convince Wade that Arden’s his perfect match.

Veterinarian Wade Roberts is done with love. But try convincing the elderly folk of Cape Harmony who are determined to play matchmaker. Now the young single women in town are bombarding him with baked goods and love notes, and being “taken” is the only way to stop the meddling grannies—which is why he needs a fake fiancée. Fast.

Arden Pearson loves planning weddings. Other people's weddings, that is. After her own engagement ended in disaster, she prefers to live vicariously through her work. But when she needs to persuade a big client that she’s capable of planning the celebrity wedding of the year, she’s willing to go as far as pretending to be engaged herself to her best friend’s older brother.

Soon their ruse has everyone in town believing they make the perfect couple—including Arden. She’s always been nothing more than a kid sister to Wade, and it might take a village to convince him otherwise...

“I don’t understand what difference it makes if you’re married or engaged or whatever on how you do your job,” he said.

Her shoulders slumped. “Normally, it wouldn’t make a difference, until I received that bad press a few months ago.”

“The Bahamas Bolter?”

Yes,” she grumbled. “Anyway, it’s a long story, but these particular clients were hesitant to sign until I kind of sort of blurted that I was engaged.”

Wade snorted. “Seriously? It’s not like my clients think I need to own a pet to be a good veterinarian.”

“Exactly! Thank you.” She bit her lip. “Normally, I’d dismiss clientele who thought like that. However, they are pretty big clients, Wade. Huge. Huge enough that if all goes as planned, everyone will easily forget that wedding snafu I had a few months ago. I had no choice but to tell a teensy lie. And, well, since you had wanted me to pretend to be your girlfriend earlier, I figured…”

“You figured I could be your fake fiancé.”

“Yes. Will you?”

“Uh, here’s the thing. I wanted a girlfriend,” he said, folding his arms. “I didn’t say anything about a fiancée.”

“Oh, Wade, really?” She spluttered. “What’s the difference?”

“What’s the difference? It adds a whole other element to the charade. And besides, don’t you think you’re moving a little fast in our fake relationship? I had no idea you were so pushy. Fake boyfriends don’t like to be—”

“Okay, I get it!” She huffed. “So sorry I didn’t fulfill your time requirement to be fake courted properly, but like I said, this is an actual emergency.”

He took a bite of banana bread and chewed, pretending to think it over. “I don’t know…”

Arden planted her fists on her hips with a harrumph. “What don’t you know, Wade? Whether you actually missed out on the fake wooing or how unreasonable you’re acting right now?”

“Now, now. A short temper is not something particularly attractive in a fake girlfriend slash fiancée.”

“Well, maybe when a person’s career is in jeopardy and she asks a friend for help and gets turned down flat, she wouldn’t feel the urge to punch the fake boyfriend slash fiancé in the throat.”

He wanted to grin but didn’t dare. It was rare to have the upper hand with Arden—and he found he was quite enjoying this sudden little nuance, along with her begging him for help.

FIRST LOOK CELEBRATION: HER SUPER SECRET REBOUND BOYFRIEND by KERRI CARPENTER

To get over being dumped, Lola McBride crashes a high school reunion looking for a rebound fling. Who said reunions had to be zero fun in this sweet romantic comedy releasing June 2018 from Kerri Carpenter and Entangled Publishing!

 Her Super-Secret Rebound Boyfriend

It wasn’t shy librarian Lola McBride's idea to crash someone else’s high school reunion. Her best friend made her do it, insisting that having a little fun with a super-hot rebound would make her forget about her recent breakup. That’s when she meets the hottest guy she’s ever seen.

Architect Luke Erickson had no idea attending his ten-year reunion would turn out to be so fun. He catches the sexy brunette in a lie, and he counters with a proposal—He’ll keep her secret if she helps get his family off his back by pretending to be his girlfriend at an upcoming family reunion.

From one reunion to another, Lola and Luke are suddenly spending a lot of time together. Good thing they're only pretending, or this super-secret relationship could get really complicated.

“If you’re not Kelli Martindale, who exactly are you? And why lie?”

Then the whole story came tumbling out.

“The thing is, my boyfriend broke up with me last week, and I’ve been kinda bummed about it. So my roommate had this crazy, stupid idea. She thought I should have some fun by coming here and crashing the reunion.”

Luke blinked. “You didn’t graduate with me?”

“No, not technically.”

“Are you even a librarian?”

“Yes, that’s one hundred percent true. Oh God, are you going to tell?”

“Depends. I have one more question for you.” He’d made his voice as serious as he could. “What’s your real name?”

Her shoulders dropped in relief. “Lola. Lola McBride.”

“Anything else I should know?”

“I’m twenty-six. I don’t usually do things like this.” She took a deep breath. “I’m clean, neat, and I can bake a pretty good chocolate cake. I say I’m going to a body pump class at the gym sometimes, but really, I go to Target and buy a bunch of useless stuff from the dollar bins.”

“I love to read. My favorite book is Wuthering Heights, although I read every genre of fiction. Especially romance novels.” She blushed. “I mean, not the super dirty ones.” A wrinkle formed on her forehead. “Okay, I read the super dirty ones too. I love them. Don’t judge me. But I also donate to the local animal shelter. And I’m afraid of colonial people. I’m totally boring, really.”

Luke didn’t have the answers to the universe but he did know that boring was something that Lola McBride wasn’t.

“You must think I’m insane.”

Quite the opposite. He hadn’t met many women like her, and he was curious as hell. He was about to say so when his phone started vibrating again. He saw another text message.

This one was from his sister, Gwen. Mom said you are bringing a date to our reunion. True? False?

False. I’m not bringing anyone.

Oh well. I have this friend I’d love to fix you up with….

“Sorry. It’s my crazy family.”

It was official—his family was driving him mad. Why couldn’t they just back off? It was bad enough that he was going to have to go to his family reunion next weekend, but to have this kind of pressure about a date…

That’s when an idea started to form. He eyed Lola. She was clutching her basket of Jane Austen books against her chest, looking nervous. Did she really think he cared that she’d lied and crashed his high school reunion? He actually thought it was pretty funny.

“I’m really sorry I lied to you,” she said. She glanced down at the basket. “I know I’m taking this basket away from someone who actually went to school here and…”

“Here’s the deal, Lola,” he said, interrupting her. “I won’t reveal your identity tonight. You can keep your Jane Austen basket and no one will be the wiser.”

She blew out a sigh of relief. “Really? Ohmigod, you’re amazing.”

“But you have to do me a favor in return.”

“Anything.”

He flipped his phone over in his hands. “Come to my family reunion next weekend and be my pretend girlfriend.”

She stiffened. She was the New Yorker, used to being direct and dealing with people who got in her face. Yet when Noah did it, it unnerved her. “I’m not avoiding you.” Her pitch was a half-step high, the trait of a liar.

“We’ve got to talk about last night.”

She smacked her bread together and turned to face him, using her sandwich as a shield. She straightened her pose, planted her feet apart, and hoped the Wonder Woman stance would give her Amazonian strength. “Last night was a mistake.”

His dark-blue eyes flashed with a determination that told her he disagreed. Her stomach clenched, and the strength she sought eluded her. Instead she stood there, too frightened to move and too weak to stop where they were going.

He came up on her slowly, as if he knew she’d spook and scatter at any sudden movement. He reached out and tucked one blond curl behind her ear. His fingers skimmed her skin. Goose bumps blossomed down her neck, her spine, to her toenails.

“And it won’t happen again,” she said with as much conviction as she could muster. “End of discussion.” Her voice squeaked, again betraying her, though no worse than the rest of her body.

He leaned in until his lips were inches from hers. Her breathing hitched. She should have put some distance between them, acres of distance, but her feet stuck to the floor. Her eyes flickered to his lips. They’d been so soft last night and were so close right now. One little taste wouldn’t hurt, would it? She reflexively licked hers.

He moved in. His breath trailed her cheek, and his lips hovered at the edge of her jaw, just below her earlobe. She arched her neck back, giving him more access, then shivered, closed her eyes, and waited to feel his lips on her neck.

Instead, his breath fanned her ear. “Liar,” he whispered. Then he was gone.
