Snowfall and Secrets
Omega Mu Alpha Brothers #1
By: Kierra Quinn
Releasing March 6, 2016
Self-Published
In Snowfall & Secrets (Omega Mu Alpha Brothers #1) by Kierra Quinn, after learning that she's pregnant, Tess flees to Michigan where the weather is totally opposite to what she's used to in Florida. If she doesn't freeze first because she's unprepared for how cold her new town is, then she's likely to spontaneously combust once she meets the handsome Lukas, her new landlord. Determined to hide out in Michigan to keep her judgmental mother from learning the truth about her being knocked up, she works hard and gains new friends along the way that actually treat her with respect. Something she hasn't had from many of the people in her life.

Lukas knows he should keep his distance from Tess, because she's everything he would want in a woman, if he was looking for a relationship. But a tragic accident in his past, which lost him two people he loved dearly has left him with a stack of guilt that he can't seem to let go of. He's decided he'd rather be alone for the rest of his life than unload his emotional baggage onto someone else. Yet, there's something about Tess that makes him want to give forever after another chance, if he can overcome his past.

What an emotionally charged, fast-paced, captivating read Ms. Quinn has penned in this first story of her Omega Mu Alpha Brothers series, encompassing a heroine needing somewhere to hide out while making some important decisions for her future and a hero needing to overcome his past to have a chance at a future with the heroine. I really liked how this story started, as Tess was shocked by how different the weather is in Michigan and Lukas gives her a lecture on her clothing. It was actually funny the way she reacts when he gives her orders, so she doesn't end up with frostbite.

This story was well-written and had a nice blend of intense and playful dialogue. Tess really isn't afraid to give her opinion. Indeed, she can get quite feisty, especially the moment when Lukas confronts her after her first day at work. Lukas treats Tess differently than the men she's been with, which is proven from Tess's point of view. She's not used to men thinking of her as anything more than a good time.

I really liked both main characters. Their back stories were intriguing, and the major obstacle they had to overcome was tough, especially when Lukas doesn't want kids and Tess is pregnant. Yet, I liked that Lukas faced his fears because Tess was more important to him than, not being able to forgive himself for his past mistakes. Indeed, both Tess and Lukas grow throughout this story by facing their fears which includes Tess's decision about her baby's future and Lukas finally realizing that what happened in his past wasn't his fault.

Tess is strong, brave and tenacious. She's determined to make a good life for herself in Michigan without anyone judging her -- most especially her family -- for what they believe is her recurrent lack in judgment. She's also hard-working and would make a great mother, as she's good with kids being a teacher. While Lukas, he's kind and caring the way he welcomes Tess to Mackinac Island, although he thinks it's probably in his best interest to avoid her. But what I liked most was how the secondary characters encouraged Lukas to move on, to help him see that he should stop punishing himself for his past.

Overall, this was an incredible read where the couple's chemistry was intense, and the romance was filled with strong kissing moments. Yet, the author kept the sex scenes to behind closed doors. The ending wrapped this story up nicely, because Lukas proved how much he wanted Tess in his life and it was cute what Lukas's dog did when they kissed. I would recommend Snowfall and secrets, especially if you enjoy characters that need each other to heal from their pasts.

OVERALL RATING:

BLURB:
Tess escapes from Florida with a secret as big as Miami. She needs to find someplace to lay low and be on hide from her overbearing family. Mackinac Island, Michigan, should be the perfect place to hide out. However, her timing is a little off, it's the dead of winter and she's never been in temperatures below fifty degrees.

Just her luck, her landlord, Lukas, is as hot as the sun. He's also moody and hiding secrets as well. Which suits Tess fine. A man is the last complication she needs. A Michigan blizzard leaves them trapped in the same house together and things heat up, fast. Tess finds herself falling for Lukas, in spite of the secrets that could ruin everything before it even begins.

Tess took a few deep breaths and splashed some water on her face. She needed to be on full alert tonight. It would be rude to turn down the meal, and she wanted to spend some time with him or at least not be at home by herself.

But she was aware that this was how bad things happened. At least she wouldn’t be drinking tonight.

She wiped off her face and put on light make up. Nothing that made it look like she was trying, but enough that he wouldn’t think she looked like a zombie.

He had put on Dio’s ridiculous clothes, and she pranced by the door. Tess grabbed for her coat at the same time he did.

“Let me help you with that.”

Tess nodded, and her heart beat in double time. He didn’t have to be such a gentleman.

His fingers brushed the back of her neck as he helped her into her coat, and she shivered. She zipped it herself, not willing to let him go that far. She slid on a pair of light gloves since they were only walking a few yards.

Dio bounded out in front of them. They were quiet as they walked, both lost in their own thoughts. He held the door open for Tess, and she smelled the tomato and garlic.

            “Smells good.”

“Thanks,” he said, taking her coat from her. “I make a pretty good chicken parmesan.”

He cooked too. Tess creased her eyebrows. This guy was too good to be true.

            “You okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, but is there anything you aren’t good at?”

He chuckled. “Plenty. Stick around long enough, and you’ll see my faults. Trust me.”

She followed him into the kitchen and hoped for a second that there might be a chance for the two of them to develop into more than just friends. But that seemed highly unlikely. He pulled two plates out of the cupboard.

“Do you mind if we eat at the bar?”

Tess shook her head and hoisted herself on one of the stools.

He pulled a huge pan of chicken parmesan out of the oven.

“Were you planning on feeding a family?” she asked without thinking.

He frowned. “No, I like leftovers. That way I only have to cook once a week.”

“Oh,” she said, embarrassed. “I’ll try not to eat too much then.”

He grinned. “Eat all you want. But you owe me dinner next week.”

            “I can do that.”

He dished up and settled in next to her. Dio put her front paws on his lap and stuck her nose on the bar. Lukas pushed his plate away.

“Dio! You know that’s not appropriate behavior for a lady. You're embarrassing me. By the way your acting, I might have to start calling you Deka.”

Dio put her ears back and whimpered on the floor.

            “Who’s Deka?” Tess asked.

“Dog number ten. She’s the worst behaved of the bunch.”

That’s right. His fraternity brothers. “How often do you and your friends get together?”

“Everyone? Once a year. We rotate locations, but we spend every Fourth of July together. The dogs love it.”
“You never told me the story behind the dogs.”

He fidgeted with his chicken. “The story isn’t that great. Why don’t you tell me about your family?”

“Oh please. What’s so bad about this story? I know you all wanted one because you had a Doberman in your frat house. But why wait several years? And what’s with the Greek numbers?”

“I can’t tell the story without sounding like a prick.”

Tess took another bite of her chicken. She could eat the whole pan. It was delicious.

            “I’ve been warned. Now spill.”

            “You are demanding, aren’t you?”

“Guilty. Stop trying to change the subject.”

He laughed, but gave in. “Fine. Have you ever heard of Omega Mu Alpha?”
            “No, I don’t think I have.”
“It’s a super exclusive fraternity, and most of the recruits are legacy. Across the whole country, only a handful of recruits are new blood each year. We produce more millionaires than any other college frat in the U.S.”

He paused and looked at her. She wondered what he was looking for. Shock? Disgust? She settled for indifference. She still didn’t understand what this had to do with the dogs. She couldn’t give a rip what their fraternity did.

When she didn’t say anything, he continued.

“We decided that when all ten of us made our first million, we’d get the dogs. It had to be our own money, not anything from our parents. Three years ago, we finally made it.”
Wow. That wasn’t what she was expecting. “What about the names?”

“That’s the order in which we hit the milestone.”

“Well, that explains Deka’s behavior. Her owner probably feels like a loser, being last.”

As if she knew they were talking about one of her friends, Dio drug a cow chew toy into the middle of the kitchen floor and attacked it with a vengeance. She put on quite a show.

Lukas laughed. “You don’t seem to think there's anything odd about this?”

            Tess frowned. “Should I?”

“Most people get squirmy talking about that kind of cash.”

She snorted. “I’m from Miami. Everyone is filthy rich there.”

“Oh. And Seth isn’t a loser.”

            “Who’s Seth?”

“Deka’s owner. He knew he’d be last or close to it. He was the only one in our group that wasn’t a legacy. He didn’t have his parents' money to help out.”

“But I thought you couldn’t use your parents' cash,” she said as Dio found the squeaky end of her toy. The poor dear didn’t like being ignored.
“We couldn’t. But it’s much easier to earn that kind of money when you have a background that includes it. Seth was truly starting from scratch.”

“You don’t come across as a prick at all. Based on Dio’s name, I’m guessing you were number two.”

            He nodded.

It was probably rude of her to ask how he made his million. She took another bite and chewed on it for as long as she could. Would he think she was prying?

“Now I’ve told you my story. It’s your turn. What the hell is a beach babe from Miami doing in northern Michigan in the middle of winter?” he asked, and the choice was made for her.

“I needed to get away from my family for a while. Everyone expected me to fall in and do what was expected. My mom is the superintendent of the Miami-Dade school district. She had a job lined up for me in a good school. So I did what any daughter would do when she's handed everything she could possibly want. I ran away to prove I could do it on my own.”

It was his turn to chew in quiet contemplation. “Doc says you are a good teacher. He made me promise to be nice to you so you wouldn’t leave.”
Tess laughed. “Now I understand the dinner invite.”
Lukas brushed her hand. “No, I did that because my dog loves you and your stomach rumbled so loudly. Plus I thought I’d like to spend some time in your company myself.”

He grinned, and her breath caught. She liked him, and not just looking at him. This was the first indication he might feel the same way, but he’d ditch her as soon as he found out her secret.

For a second Tess had a crazy thought. Her pregnancy wasn’t that far along. If she could seduce him tonight, she might be able convince him he’s the father. After the conversation they just had about money, she knew he’d support her.

She immediately hated herself for thinking such a thing. Tess pushed her plate away, her appetite gone. This needed to end now.

“I should go. Thank you for dinner.”

“No, wait. I could make coffee. Stay a little while longer.”

She shook her head. “No. That’s sweet, but I am tired from my week.” He didn’t need a woman with baggage. She knew it would be polite to offer to help with dishes, but suddenly, she couldn’t get away fast enough.

Lukas looked at her with his expression closed off and nodded.

She didn’t let him help with her coat and escaped quickly. Once back in her own apartment, she stood against the door, taking deep breaths.

What was she thinking? This was the first time in a long time a guy showed her as much respect as Lukas had, and her first thought was, "How can I take advantage of him?"

That was cruel and unlike her. The secret of her pregnancy was getting to her. She hadn’t told anyone. Not her mom. Not her sisters. Not her best friend. No one. She was glad her first doctor’s appointment was next week so she could tell someone and find out more about her options. Hopefully, her doctor wouldn’t judge her.

Tess put her hand on her stomach. It hadn’t grown much. How long would it be before people noticed? How would she tell her mom? Hopefully, she’d have the courage to at least tell her before the baby was born. Or, if she chose to give it up for adoption, her mom would never find out.

Phoenix Montagno looked at the devastation around her.
The havoc she’d wreaked in the space that was her apartment hadn’t produced the results she’d wanted. All she’d made was a big mess.
Papers covered every square inch of the carpet immediately surrounding her, and in spite of the chaos she’d created, the one piece of paper she needed wasn’t among any of the others.
She sighed. How could she lose her birth certificate?
When she’d moved out of her parents’ house, she’d made sure to take everything important. That had included her high school and college diplomas and her birth certificate.
Her diplomas were there, along with her income tax paperwork going back three years—as if she’d ever need that. She’d never be audited. Not on her minuscule teacher’s salary. The IRS had far bigger fish to go after.
She’d found her social security card, but what she’d been looking for—the birth certificate—eluded her. She even remembered holding it in her hand and thinking how she’d better put it in a safe place, but she’d be damned if she could remember where that safe place was.
It should have been right there with everything else. Why wasn’t it?
Her parents were going to flip.
They’d offered to keep her important papers for her, locked up in their fireproof document safe. Instead Phoenix had insisted she would be responsible for holding on to her own things. She’d taken it, against their advice, and now she’d lost it.
Her father had always said she should be more organized. How everything important should be in labeled folders inside a locked, preferably fireproof filing cabinet.
That was his way, not hers. They were different people and they operated completely differently. Just as she hadn’t picked up even a little bit of her mother’s perfect housekeeping skills, her father’s organizational skills had also skipped her generation.
Phoenix huffed out a breath in frustration. How could she lose anything in this tiny apartment?
Her place wasn’t small in a bad way, just cozy and quaint. She loved the home she’d created and the space she’d chosen to create it in. From the big windows that offered a view of the park across the street to the location, close enough to town so she could walk to school and the coffee shop on nice days.
Most important of all, it was all hers.
Besides, it was what she could comfortably afford right now on her teacher’s salary—living in California wasn’t cheap—but the point was, her place was too damn small to lose something in it.
It was also too small for the big, not to mention ugly, metal filing cabinet her father would have her get if she’d listened to him—or if she admitted to him that she’d lost her birth certificate.
Phoenix liked her own filing system. She kept her important papers in a big floral hatbox on the floor in the corner of the room. What didn’t fit in there went into a few more decorative rectangular boxes. They were sold by stores for photo storage, but she used them for paperwork and was very proud of her decorating savvy in repurposing the items for her own unique use.
The most pressing things that required attention, such as bills that needed to be paid, went into the wicker basket on top of the hatbox. She had a system and it worked fine for her—usually.
She had to find that certificate, and not just because it was an important piece of identification. She needed it or there’d be no passport. Without a passport, there’d be no trip to Aruba during midwinter break with her friend Kim.
That was enough inspiration to find the birth certificate, but on top of her trip and her need for official ID for any number of reasons in the future, if she had to admit to her parents that she’d lost it, she’d never hear the end of it.
Sometimes it was painfully obvious she’d been adopted, and she wasn’t talking about her blond hair and blue eyes being the opposite of her father’s dark brown hair and eyes and her mother’s chestnut hair and green eyes.
When it came to her temperament, her interests, her easygoing nature, she couldn’t be more different. She loved her parents to death, but she was nothing like them.
The differences just proved the nature versus nurture debate. She could grow up with parents who had every aspect of their lives planned, organized, and compartmentalized, but somewhere deep in her DNA she carried the genes that made her the opposite of the couple who had raised her.
Usually being a fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants kind of girl worked for her. Not today.
This was too much to deal with alone. She needed backup.
Crawling toward her phone, on the floor just past the mess, Phoenix stretched and grabbed the cell before flopping back onto her butt amid the explosion of papers.
Phoenix dialed the number and waited for Kim to pick up.
            “Hello?”
Bracing for her friend’s displeasure, Phoenix drew in a breath. “We have a problem.”
“What kind of a problem?” The wariness was clear in Kim’s tone.
There was no way around it. She had to ’fess up. “I can’t find my birth certificate.”
            “Um, okay. And that’s a problem because . . . ?”
“I need it to get a passport so I can go with you to Aruba.
            That’s why.”
“You don’t have a passport?” Her friend sounded shocked.
“No, I don’t have a passport. I’ve barely traveled outside of California, never mind leaving the country to go anywhere I needed a passport.” Phoenix sighed.
Kim was missing the point. Her lack of a passport wasn’t as big a problem as her current lack of the proper identification she needed to get a passport.
“Don’t worry about it. You have plenty of time to get a passport. We’re not going away for months.”
“But I read it can take months to get a passport. And that’s not the problem anyway. Didn’t you hear me? The problem is that to apply for a passport I need my birth certificate, which I can’t find. What do I do about my birth certificate?” Phoenix was ready to scream as her frustration mounted.
How could Kim, whom Phoenix knew was an intelligent woman, not understand the enormity of the situation?
“Oh, well, that’s easy. You just have to send away for a duplicate birth certificate.”
            “Wait, I can do that?”
Her heart leaped. If what Kim said was true, it would solve everything.
“Yes. Of course you can, silly. Seriously, you think they expect people to be able to hang on to one little piece of paper from birth until death? That’s crazy. Did you think you were the only person in the country ever to lose their birth certificate?”
“No. I guess not.” That concept made Phoenix feel moderately better about the whole situation. Could it really be that easy? It was hard to believe. “You’re sure I can just get a new one?”
“Sure. My mother lost my brother’s. When he got old enough to drive and needed it to get his permit, she just had to apply for a duplicate in the county where he was born. It came in the mail like a week or two later.”
“Wow.” She could do this. Fix her mess without her parents ever knowing. “Wait. I’m not sure what county I was born in. I only know my parents adopted me in Arizona.”
            “Just ask your parents.”
            “I can’t do that.”
“Why not? Will they care we’re going to Aruba? Aren’t you going to tell them? How are you going to explain your tan?”
“I’m not trying to hide the trip. I’m trying to hide the fact that I lost my birth certificate. My father thinks I’m scatterbrained as it is, and I doubt my mother has ever lost a thing in her life. I’ll have to try to get out of them where I was born somehow . . .”
            “Uh, Phoenix?”
            “Yeah?”
            “Think about it.”
“About what?” She was in no mood for Kim’s guessing games.
            “Your name.”
Phoenix frowned, not understanding what Kim was hinting at and wishing she’d just come out and say it. “What about my name? A Phoenix is a mythical bird.”
“And it’s also the largest city in Arizona, the state where you were adopted. And it’s in . . . hang on a second . . .Maricopa County. At least it is according to the search I just did online.”
“You think that’s where I was born? Phoenix, Arizona?”
“I think the odds are pretty good. If you really don’t want to ask them, I’d try applying for the duplicate certificate in Maricopa County and see what happens. The worst they can do is say you weren’t born there.”

REVIEW: SAVED BY THE SEAL by DIANA GARDIN

Saved By The SEAL
Battle Scars #2
By: Diana Gardin
Releasing March 8, 2016
Forever Yours
In Saved by the Seal (Battle Scars #2) by Diana Gardin, Grisham Abbot loves being a NAVY Seal, so it's hard for him to come to terms that his career will soon be over due to a career-ending incident that resulted in him losing part of one leg. Still, no matter what he's been through and how much he's suffered, he'll do anything to save the woman he spies drowning. Except, saving Greta Owen while still learning to deal with his injury isn't his toughest challenge. What is, is that she's the one woman he should stay away from. And yet, he finds her impossible to resist. She's the light at the end of the dark tunnel his life has been lately.

What a wonderful and heartwarming tale Ms. Gardin has penned with this book, encompassing the sexy protector trope, a hero needing the right motivation to get his life back on track, and a heroine determined to help the wounded warrior that saved her life. I really liked how this book started with Grisham preparing himself for a return to one of his favorite activities. Does he have the guts to push through his fears?

As for the dialogue, it kept me entertained from start to finish with the playful banter between the main characters. Yet, I liked how intense it became due to the main characters back stories, Greta finding herself the target of a stalker, and Grisham having to comes to terms with how much his life has changed. However, I was a tad disappointed by how quickly I figured out who the person stalking Greta was from the way this secondary character interacted with the heroine.

I really enjoyed both main characters. Greta is strong and brave. She knows it's risky to keep being around Grisham, yet she can't just turn off her feelings. Besides, he needs someone to help him find his way back to being the man he was before his injury. She's also very tight with her mother and sisters, and will do anything for them. However, things between her and her father are complicated. He's never been there for her, which makes her relationship with Grisham hard to handle. Because they're in similar lines of work, and she's afraid that Grisham will choose his job over her. Seeing how her mom struggled with her dad's decisions, she doesn't want that for her life.

While Grisham, he handles the changes he's been dealt in his life extremely well. He's tenacious, courageous, and protective of those he cares about, which is proven for what he does for both Greta and his mom. Yet, what I liked most about him was his determination to again do things that he could before his injury. He needed to achieve those things in order to move on, to prove that he's still quite capable of doing something he's always wanted to do, which is save people.

Hot sex scenes heat up the pages, and do justice to this couple's intense chemistry, which is there from the very beginning. Grisham knows he should stay away from Greta because he's not relationship material, and believes he'll only end up hurting her. Yet, it's hard for him to stay away, since she's exactly the person he needs to help him heal completely. As for Greta, she's unsure of herself in the beginning of their growing relationship, which made me feel sorry for her. How could she possibly believe that Grisham wanted someone else when the narrative of his emotions and reactions as well as the dialogue between them proved otherwise?

Overall, I really liked this story where the secondary characters provide almost as much entertainment as the main characters. Greta and Grisham's friends certainly think they're perfect for each other, encouraging them to explore their mutual feelings. The ending wrapped this story up perfectly, as Grisham proves to Greta that nothing is more important to him than she is. I would recommend Saved by the Seal by Diana Gardin, if you enjoy stories about wounded heroes needing the love of a good heroine to help him heal, or like a hero in uniform.

OVERALL RATING:

BLURB:
He saved her life. She showed him how to live it . . .

When he sees a woman drowning, Grisham Abbot immediately leaps into action. The Navy SEAL forgets his training, his past, and the explosion that forever scarred his body and his mind. He can only remember what he was born to do. But saving Greta Owen is a complication Grisham is definitely not ready for. She’s stunning and gorgeous—like sunlight after months of darkness. Yep, Grisham is so, so screwed.

Greta knows that the smart thing to do would be to run from Grisham. He’s a wounded warrior, and his head is a big-time mess. The problem is that Greta wants to make him her mess. One kiss and she’s completely in over her head. And if this SEAL risked himself to save her, then she must find a way to bring him back to life . . .

The stinging hot needles of Grisham’s shower feels heavenly as it washes the sand and salt off of my body. I smile to myself as I run my hands through my wet hair, remembering how amazing the day was. I’m also remembering how hot Grisham is on a surfboard. He’s such a natural out there, dipping low on his board when he needs to and riding each wave in effortlessly. He never once lost a wave.

It was an incredible day.

And now that same hot, sexy guy is waiting for me somewhere in his house while I shower. I can’t keep the smile off my face.

Suddenly, a warm hand slides around my waist until it rests on my stomach. I gasp as Grisham yanks me back against the hard planes of his wet body, and one of my arms immediately goes up to wrap around the back of his neck.

“You’re fucking beautiful,” he groans into my ear. I can feel it; he’s hard and ready for me, and I turn in his arms to face him.

I’m so not prepared for the sight of Grisham fully naked in the shower with me.

My eyes roam greedily from his broad, tattooed shoulders to the muscled wall of his chest. Then they drift down to the rack of abdominal muscles that could and should definitely be in a magazine. A trail of dark hair leads down to the impressive length of his cock, and a whimper escapes me. I pull my eyes away to travel down his thick thighs and cantaloupe-sized calf, before my gaze meanders lazily up his body once more.

And when I meet his gaze, I’m instantly wet and ready for him, more so than I’ve ever been before. Because the sight of a man that looks like Grisham devouring every inch of me in return is beyond hot.

“I’m done waiting,” he grinds out, just before his lips collide with mine.
