In Hard to Protect (Black Ops Heroes #3) by Incy Black, Special Agent Will Berwick can't believe the tricky assignment he's been tasked with, which he's not allowed to refuse. Seducing the woman he's dubbed the Ice Queen isn't going to be easy, but he isn't above using any means necessary to get the information he needs from her. However, he never expected she'd be the one to unravel his hardened heart and have him contemplating happy ever after. Will he be able to let the past go, so that he and Angel can have a future together?

What a gripping and thrilling ride this author takes readers on, which had hooked me from the moment I started reading and didn't let go until the end. Really, this story is romantic suspense at its best with its fast-paced plot that encompassed numerous twists, the gripping action and suspense, and compelling characters with such heart-breaking back stories that deserve forever love after all that they've been through. The way this story started had me liking the hero immediately because of the situation he's dealing with. What will he do to his superior officer? Will he challenge the man?

The dialogue was intense due to the main characters back stories and everything they go through on their journey to happy ever after. Is Will able to overcome his past to find happiness with Angel? Will Angel finally be able to deal with how she believes she let down her brother who clearly needed help? However, the dialogue wasn't all intense. There were some light hearted moments between the main characters that made me smile. They both have a way of getting under each other's skin with their words and their actions. Certainly, Will has the skills to tempt Angel, but she knows just how to tempt his as much. Who will win their game of seduction? A game where Will is trying to get her to expose her secrets while Angel is determined to make sure she doesn't reveal what he wants to know.

Both the main characters had me hooked by their back stories, how far Will is willing to go to get Angel to spill the information he needs, and the way they challenge each other. Angel and Will have both gone through a lot in the past, and it was understandable why the heroine didn't trust easily. Because the last time she trusted someone, things went horribly wrong and her family suffered. And even though she's still affected by the past, she's strong, brave and I liked how determined she was to protect someone she loved, even if her loyalty wasn't in her best interest. But what I liked most about the heroine is that she didn't settle for the kind of relationship Will could give her, because she deserved more, especially if he couldn't let go of the past and his guilt.

While the hero, he's confident, ambitious and I liked how protective he was of the heroine once he realized that things aren't always what they seem. He has a lot of guilt over what happened to his ex, and I could sympathize with why he wouldn't want to give love another chance. He's already let down one woman he cared a lot about, and he wouldn't do the same to another. Except Angel isn't anything like his ex, which is proven by how much she's survived in the past.

Overall, Ms. Black has penned a superb read in this romantic suspense, where Angel and Will have plenty of chemistry and delivered a good dose of hot romance. The way this story ended had me concerned for the main characters and shocked by the admission of someone one of the main characters thought they could trust. How would Will keep Angel safe, or would it be her skills that would keep him safe? I would highly recommend Hard to Protect by Incy Black, especially if you enjoy romantic suspense or the enemy to lovers trope.

What he wanted was an explanation as to why she’d nixed his return to active duty. He grinned, instead. “You seem more piqued than usual by my silence, Doc. Pre-menstrual tension?”
No flinch. No sharp intake of breath. She didn’t even blink. But the sudden chill she threw damn near caused his balls to retract.
Then, like an assassin’s blade in the dark, she sliced. “Suffered any symptoms of impotency since your injury, Berwick?”
Perversely, his groin heated. Well, apparently, if he wasn’t going to dignify her surprising and utterly unprofessional counter-challenge with a response, his dick would. Odd, when to-date, this woman hadn’t stirred so much as an extra pulse-throb from him.
Not that she was unattractive. On the contrary, her classical beauty could launch ships. Flawless bone-structure. Complexion creamy, lustrous as a pearl. Fathomless grey eyes intent enough to make a man’s soul hum. Wide mouth. Generous lips, blush-pink and ripe. Hinting at dirty.
Her demeanor though—do-not-touch frigid.
Jesus, if someone had told him a Nordic God had carved her out of ice and then had second thoughts about getting close enough to breathe some warmth into her for fear of forevermore ejaculating snowflakes, he wouldn’t have argued.
Without breaking eye contact, he vaguely imagined what she might look like with that tight French braid of hers loosened, the tips of her breasts peeking through the untidy fall of blond tresses, as she lay naked, writhing beneath his hands.
And gave himself a mental slap.
Never going to happen. No way would he take this female to bed. Even if he survived the encounter, he doubted she would. Someone, or something, had damaged her. No woman wrapped herself in that many layers of frost without good reason. She may have crossed him, and for that she would pay, but he didn’t want to break her, for Christ’s sake.
He’d shattered Diana, and in return her death—suicide—had shattered him. A joyride through hell he preferred not to repeat.
No, he’d cajole the whereabouts of Treherne’s brother from her in a way that didn’t require physical contact or, at least, not deep physical contact. The odd affectionate caress he’d allow, purely as a sign of friendship. He had a feeling she could do with an ally. “What would have to happen for you to agree to have dinner with me?”
“Both ice caps would have to melt.”
He choked back, Well, you would know, and widened his grin. To hell with his reservations. This wintery beauty shared none of Diana’s frailty. The Doc could take care of herself.
Game on.

Boston Heat #1

BLURB:
Ex-Army Ranger Erik Grady lives for the job. So when his chief at the Boston Fire Department offers him two choices—mandated therapy for supposed PTSD or a permanent desk job at the station, he reluctantly agrees to see a shrink. Only this doctor is unlike anything he expected. Female and curved in all the right places? Check. Hotter than a four-alarm fire? Check. The kind of woman that can heat his blood in and out of bed? Check, check. And oh, yeah, he just happens to have firsthand experience...

Of all the men to walk into psychologist Olivia Jones' office, why did it have to be him? Her one-night stand isn't playing by the rules of just. One. Night. She’s had her heart broken in the past, and no way is she going there again. And now he's blackmailing her into three dates? Well, if that's what it takes to make him see a different therapist, fine. She can handle it. So what if the chemistry between them is combustible? She's a professional, damn it. She'll date Mr. I'm Too Sexy For My Bunker Pants. But it won’t end in the fun he expects.

It’s time to see how much heat this fireman can take...

“Sounds like a plan. Actually, it sounds like a date. Our second official one, to be exact.”
Olivia chuckled. “What are you talking about? We’ve had dozens of dates.”
“On the contrary, Dr. Jones, watching movies and hooking up at our respective apartments is not a proper date. Attending a party at your parents’ house, however, is definitely a date-type thing.”
“But my parents won’t even be there.”
“What about your godfather?”
A slow smile curved her lips. “Yes, I suppose Uncle Eddie and Aunt Tish will be in attendance.”
“There, you see? Anything that includes your family and my therapist is definitely an official date.” Erik gave her a sly grin and crowded her into the corner where the equipment lockers met the wall. “Come on, humor me. Calling it a date makes me feel like I’m not only a piece of meat being used for my body.”
“Fine,” she said with an exaggerated sigh and roll of those sexy hazel eyes. “It’ll officially be our second date. But just so we’re clear, I am only using you for your body.”
Peering up at him coyly through the dark fringe of her lashes, Olivia placed a single manicured nail at the hollow of his throat and dragged it down the center of his body. The muscles of his torso flexed and shuddered in its wake, shooting signals to his cock and balls that it was time to play. Thankfully, he still had a small supply of blood in his brain that prevented him from hauling her into his office and fucking her over his desk. Christ, that’s getting added to the fantasy bucket list. For now, though, he had to postpone the fun until later.
“Oddly enough, I’m very okay with being your boy toy, and I encourage you to get as much use out of me as you can. Now, I don’t know if you know this, but I also happen to be a firefighter. So if you’ve got any hot spots you need checked, I’d be more than happy to bring my hose by later and check them out thoroughly.”
“Mmm, that’s the best idea I’ve heard all day. You’re such a do-gooder, Lieutenant Grady.”
“Just doing my civic duty, ma’am. But you better get out of here before I decide you need to take the afternoon off so I can do some initial inspections.”
Laughing, she bussed him on the lips quickly and ducked under his arm, giving him a sexy wink before leaving him with the biggest hard-on that’d ever graced the firehouse gym. Fuck me. Time for a cold shower.

REVIEW: IT HAPPENED ON LOVE STREET BY LIA RILEY

It Happened on Love Street
Everland #1
By: Lia Riley
Releasing April 25th, 2017
Forever

It Happened on Love Street (Everland, Georgia #1) by Lia Riley, Everland was only supposed to be a temporary stop on Pepper Knight's way to fulfilling her plan in become a successful lawyer. However, she never considered she'd be needing to find a job almost immediately when she arrives in town and discovers she's lost the position she had lined up before she even started. Luckily, the town vet comes up with a suitable job for her. The only thing is: she needs to interact with a handful of dogs. Sounds easy, but it's not. Besides, the more time she spends getting to know the people of Everland, the more she begins to find it hard to leave, even knowing leaving is what's best for her. Can Rhett Valentine, the man the townspeople dub 'Cupid' convince her to stay, or will she run away from the only man she could see herself settling down with?

I can't believe I've never read any of this author's books before, even though Ms. Riley's stories have been recommended to me several times. Now though, I can finally say that I've read something by her, and I've got to say that I'll be reading more, especially of this series. As this first book in her Everland series starts it off wonderfully, and had me riveted by the characters, the well-written dialogue and the fast-paced plot that had me reading this story in one sitting. The way this story started immediately had me wanting to know more about the heroine. Why has she moved to Everland? Why does she have a fear of dogs? What will happen to her now that her plans have fallen through for why she came to Everland?

The dialogue was a wonderful combination of intense and playful and I loved the history of Everland. It's a small town where plenty of interesting things have happened and the townspeople can be quite nosy. The elderly women of town love to tease the hero, and I enjoyed how he took it all in stride, despite the fact that he'd rather not have everyone in town know everything he does. Moreover, I could sympathize with the hero when it came to his relationship with his father. They didn't get along and Rhett is a huge disappointment. Luckily though, he has a wonderful sister that more than makes up for his father's attitude. But what I liked most about the hero was that despite the fact he didn't want a relationship after how his last one turned out, he begins to start thinking of a future with Pepper. Will she give him a chance? Will she finally put herself first before her family?

While Pepper, there were so many reasons to like her. She has a few decisions to make that aren't easy. Will she choose her family or Rhett? Will she give Rhett a chance when he finally decides to give a relationship between them a shot? Furthermore, I really enjoyed that she stepped out of her comfort zone when it came to the job she ended up taking. It wasn't easy for her after what happened in the past, but at least it helped her overcome her fear. However, what I liked most about the heroine is everything that happened to her, especially what happens to her at the river and the confrontation with a certain judge. Why did she have to be so stubborn in getting what she'd lost? Why is the judge so mean to her when she had every right to say what she says?

Overall, Ms. Riley has penned a wonderful read in this book, which made me laugh at times, had me smiling at others, and had me shaking my head towards the end. How could the heroine do what she does after what her sister says to her? Moreover, the strong chemistry between Pepper and Rhett spills over onto the pages in hot and detailed sex scenes and made me happy that these two gave each other a chance. Pepper needs Rhett, because she's always put those she loves first, but no-one seems to do the same for her until Rhett, even though she's very close with her sister and father. The way this story ended was perfect, as Pepper finally realized that her family didn't need her as much as she thought they did. They were moving on with their lives, and determined to look out for themselves more. I would recommend It Happened on Love Street by Lia Riley, if you enjoy second chance romances, small town romances or books by authors Marina Adair, Tessa Bailey or Lori Wilde.

REVIEW: TO ME I WED by KM JACKSON

To Me I Wed
Unconventional Brides #2
By: KM Jackson
Releasing April 25th, 2017
Dafina

In To Me I Wed (Unconventional Brides #2) by KM Jackson, with her sisters getting married one-by-one, Lily Perry is feeling the pressure from her family to find her Mr. Right. Except Lily is happy with the way her life is, so why does she need a man to make her life more fulfilled? Instead, she concocts a plan to marry herself and goes through with organizing everything from the dress to where the ceremony will be held. However, she never anticipated Vincent Caro getting under her skin and make her question what she's doing. Can Vincent convince her that love is worth the risk, or will she continue to fly solo when it comes to relationships?

Although I haven't read the first book of this series, I found I could easily read this story as a stand-alone. From start to finish, this book was entertaining, fast-paced and I liked that it had such a unique plot of a woman wanting to marry herself, even though it did seem a bit outlandish. How does one go about marrying themselves? Is it even possible? Why would she want to marry herself? The way this story started had me feeling sorry for the heroine, because of how her family thinks she needs the kind of happiness they've all found in her life. Will they try and set her up with someone?

The dialogue had me hooked, and I enjoyed every moment the hero and heroine interacted, whether they were at odds because the hero couldn't understand why she'd want to marry herself or whether they were getting along. Moreover, I enjoyed the heroine's stubbornness, her need for not conforming to what her family wants for her, the way she interacts with the hero and her fight to do what she believes is best for her. Because if she doesn't marry herself to prove that she loves herself, then how could she expect anyone else to love her enough to commit to a relationship.

However, in saying that, I liked how difficult it was for her. The way the heroine struggled to decide whether she'd go through with the wedding, as she got closer and closer with Vincent. Which indeed, made me sympathize with the hero, because her decision to marry herself wasn't easy for him to accept. While the hero, he's hard-working, tenacious and I liked how he wanted to honor his mother in everything he did with making his dreams as a chef and having his own restaurant come true. Seriously, he shouldn't doubt how proud his mom would be, even though she's not with him to see how his life has turned out. But what I liked most of all about the hero was how he supported and helped the heroine, despite how he felt about her wanting to marry herself in the beginning. Not that I could blame him, as it seemed like her decision was an asinine idea to start with.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read where I loved how Lily's grandma wasn't afraid to give her advice when it came to Lily giving Vincent a chance and I also loved how there was plenty of chemistry between this couple that deserved to be explored. The way this story ended had me concerned for one of the secondary characters, but I was pleased by how everything turned out for Vincent and Lily. Certainly, after what happened, it goes to show both the hero and heroine that love is worth fighting for. I would recommend To Me I Wed by KM Jackson, if you enjoy stories with unconventional storylines, second chance romances or books by authors Tina Martin, Farrah Rochon or Rochelle Alers.

REVIEW: JACK OF HEARTS by SANDRA OWENS

Jack of Hearts
Aces & Eights #1
By: Sandra Owens
Releasing February 14th, 2017
Montlake Romance

In Jack of Hearts (Aces & Eights #1) by Sandra Owens, Alex Gentry is determined to take down a notorious drug lord, but he never imagined he'd fall in love with the man's niece. Not after he befriends the man's slimeball son to discover information necessary to his case and unwittingly makes Madison Parker his informant. He knows being together is dangerous, not just for her but for him. Still, he can't help getting close to her. Will she be able to forgive him when she learns the truth of why he came into her life, or will his secrets tear them apart?

What a highly entertaining, fast-paced read Ms. Owens has penned in this book, encompassing three hot FBI agents that happen to be brothers; the sexy protector trope; a strong heroine that fights for her independence every step of the way, even if it means standing up to her slime-ball of a cousin and his overbearing father; and well-written dialogue, which made this story gratifying and a real page-turner. The way this story started with the prologue pulled me into this story immediately and didn't let go until I was at the end of the book. What story was the investigative reporter writing? Why was it so dangerous for him?

As for the main characters, both the hero and heroine were fantastic, and so were the secondary in Alex's brothers and Madison's best friend. I was curious as to the history between Court (one of the hero's brothers) and Lauren (the heroine's best friend), yet it was the hot romance, the underlying threat this couple faced, and their banter that enthralled me, so much so that I ended up with a book hangover I'd gladly give myself again when I re-read this story. Because I loved how strong and brave the heroine was and that she'd do anything to separate her mother from her uncle's influence. Since it seemed the man was doing everything in his power to make sure Madison's mother wad reliant on him. I also liked that the heroine stood up to her slime-ball and desperate cousin and overbearing uncle and wasn't about to let them do whatever they wanted when it came to her store, even though her uncle had the right to. No way was she going to allow them to do anything illegal that could get her into trouble.

While the hero, he's been through a lot in his life and I could understand why he'd choose a profession like the FBI to pursue, because of what he went through with his father. How could he not want to protect the innocent and punish the guilty when no one did it for him besides his brothers? Also, I liked that he couldn't stay away from Madison, although he knew that being with her was wrong, because of the secrets he was keeping. But what I liked most of all is how protective he was of the heroine and that he wasn't afraid to warn her cousin from doing anything to Madison, because the slime-ball would be in for a world of hurt if he did.

Overall, Ms. Owens has penned an outstanding read in this book that I would highly recommend, not only because the hero and his brothers  are drool-worthy due to their protective ways and alpha tendencies, but because this story without a doubt will keep a reader hooked with its suspense and romance. The way this story ended had me concerned for the hero and heroine, because of the suspense. Would the hero be able to keep Madison safe? How far is Alex willing to go to protect Madison? Moreover, I'm glad they could tease each other when they're talking about being together forever after everything they go through towards the end. Yet, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, because not only did it leave me wondering whether the Gentry brothers will be able to deal with what's to come for them, but will they accept the person whose point-of-view the epilogue is from into their lives?
