If Mary Babington-Smith knows nothing else, it's that Lord Edwin Sutton kissed her. Regardless of who-kissed-whom, with the deed witnessed, they have no choice but to carry on with a temporary, fake, engagement. When Edwin sweetens the deal, offering Mary the money she needs to pursue her independence if she can play the lovesick fiancée for two weeks, Mary rises to the challenge. In two weeks, she'll have everything she wants, and this time she'll be the one to walk out of his life.

Despite Sutton's argumentative, self-assured nature, when Mary glimpses a sliver of the boy he used to be, she vows to peel away every layer of armor he uses to shield his emotions. Somewhere underneath that worldly exterior is the kind-hearted man she once loved, but in order to find him, she'll have to give him the power to hurt her...and he's already broken her trust once...

In How to Fall for the Wrong Man (Ladies of Passion #3) by Harmony Williams, Mary Babington-Smith would be a fool not to accept Lord Edwin Sutton's fake engagement proposal, especially when the money he's offering will give her the chance to achieve her independence and set her dreams in motion. However, she never imagined she'd fall in love with the man. Will their fake engagement become one for real or will they both walk away from their shot at happy ever after?

Being a romance reader that much prefers stories be told in the third person, I think Ms. Williams did a marvellous with this historical romance, even though it's told in the first person from the heroine's point-of-view. Really, the characters were fascinating and often butted heads with the heroine being quite independent and fierce while the hero is determined to look out for her and protect her because she certainly doesn't put enough stock in her own protection, even if it does seem she can take care of herself.

As for the dialogue, it was very entertaining, as this is a story encompasses the friends to lovers and fake relationship tropes. Will Edwin be able to win Mary's heart? Will they realize how in love they are with each other before it's too late?  Moreover, I really enjoyed both the main characters. The heroine is resilient, courageous, has a heart of gold in the way she always wants to do something to help others whether it be humans or animals; and I liked how determined she was to win the challenge the hero proposed. Can she play the hero's lovesick fiancé for two weeks? I also liked how she made good friends with some of the secondary characters, even though it felt wrong to be deceiving her new friends.

While the hero, he's confident, is used to getting his own way and I liked how he pushes the heroine's buttons just as much as he pushes hers. I also liked how protective he was of the heroine and how determined he was to win her over because he needs her just as much as she needs him. Yet, what I liked most of all about the hero was how much of a challenge the heroine was because she's so independent and isn't about to let any man dictate what she can and can't do. Will she realize that all the hero is trying to do is protect her?

Overall, Ms. Williams has delivered a really god read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong and heady from the moment they come face-to-face for the first time; the romance shows how good these two are together; and the ending had me loving that these two didn't give up on each other because they're meant to be together. I would recommend How to Fall for the Wrong Man by Harmony Williams, if you enjoy Historical Romances, the friends to lovers trope, the fake relationship trope, or books by authors Eva Devon, Darcy Burke, Jess Michaels and Callie Hutton.

I danced through the downpour, holding a shawl over my head to keep my intricate hairdo from wilting. The driver hurried to position the steps below the coach door. I accepted his help to mount the steps, thanking him as I paused in the threshold. The interior smelled of wet leather with the faint undertone of cedar. Edwin’s hulking shadow, his hat on his lap due to the low ceiling, was squished into the side of the carriage facing forward.

I liked to face forward. I waited, rain trickling down the back of my neck, but he didn’t move.

Inching forward, I lingered long enough for him to scoot to the side to make room for me to pass, then squeezed myself in next to him.

We pressed together from thigh to shoulder. Well, my shoulder. I only reached midway up his arm.

Shadows decorated the carriage, but I heard the scowl in his voice when he exclaimed, “Bloody hell, Mary. Take the other seat.”

“No. I like to face forward.”

“Well, so do I.”

Our gazes met, sparking light in the darkness as the driver shut the door. The shutters were pulled tight over the window to keep out the rain. Droplets splattered the carriage. The air inside grew thick. Edwin sat so close to me, his breath fanned my forehead.

The carriage lurched into motion

“You won’t back down from this, will you?”

“Do I ever?”

With a grumble emphasizing his reluctance, Edwin shifted in his spot. He used the motion of the conveyance to propel him to the other side.

Now only our knees brushed. Cooler air washed my right side, a bit of a disappointment, to be honest. He’d given up far too easily. With a sigh, I settled back into the squabs.

“You look ridiculous,” he said bluntly.

My back stiffened. “How can you tell? It’s black as night in here.”

“I saw you when you entered. You look a fright.”

I raised my hand to brush my cheek, then my hair. Had I erred? “A fine thing for a man to say to his future wife.”

He groaned. “Don’t remind me. We still have an entire evening ahead.”

“Then you’d best make an effort to dote upon me or else no one will believe we’re to be married.”

Edwin chuckled. “I’m fairly certain if any man tried to dote on you, you’d punch him in the face.”

A smile teased the corners of my mouth, but I didn’t let it out. “I promise not to do you physical harm tonight. Though you might start off on a better foot by complimenting what I’m wearing.”

“How can I? You’re smothered in ribbons!”

“I have one.” Come to think of it, I shared his aversion.

“And one in your hair. And, who knows where else, probably on your stockings, too.”

I laughed. “Why would I put ribbons on my stockings? You aren’t going to see them there.”

“Please tell me this isn’t for my benefit.”

My smile slipped. “Certainly not. I wore the ribbons for me.”

“But you hate ribbons. And most other feminine frippery. Are you wearing rouge tonight?”

My stomach flipped. He remembered? I used to rage about the dresses I had to wear as a child. I swallowed, trying to maintain a cool mien.

“I am. I can look feminine too, sometimes. It’s not against the law.”

For a long moment, the silence stretched thin. What was he thinking? Perhaps he agreed with the gossips of the ton, who whispered that no man would ever find me attractive because I refused to act demure.

I don’t care either way. But my stomach swished with every jolt of the carriage, waiting for his answer.

Finally, he said, “No. It’s not. But I prefer you as you are, without artifice.”

In Anywhere with You by Christina Elle, Teegan Michaels is sick of attending weddings without a date at her side, especially when her friends are finding love and experiencing everything she wishes she had in her life. So, when her best friend's brother asks her for a favor, Teegan can't help but agree, especially since she's always had a thing for Wes. However, all Wes wants is revenge against the woman that broke his heart and is now marrying someone else. Will Teegan help Wes and find a way to show him that they're perfect for each other or will Wes break Teegan's heart?

This novella was a really quick read and I found once I started I could not put it down because the main characters were fantastic, the dialogue was very entertaining and had me loving the hero and heroine's growing relationship, as Wes is Teegan's best friend's brother; and the fast-paced plot had some interesting obstacles for these two to overcome because Teegan has always had feelings for Wes and she's finally going to get the chance to be with him, even if it is just fake.

The way this story started drew me in immediately, as it's understandable why the heroine wants a date for this wedding, but is going along with Wes's plan for revenge really a good idea? Will she help him? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where this story really takes off, as the hero will do just about anything to get what he wants and what he wants is revenge. Will his charm be enough to win Teegan over?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the hero because he's been through so much with what happened to him and then to have the woman he loved leave him on top of it was hard to handle and it's understandable why he wants revenge. How could he not have seen the woman he once loved for the shallow woman she was? Will his revenge be sweet or will someone get hurt? Moreover, the heroine is resilient, courageous and I loved how she kept digging herself in deeper with everything she blurts out that had me smiling or laughing because her and Wes's relationship is fake, and yet, she's making it out to be very real. I also liked the close friendships she shares with some of the secondary characters who are supportive of her relationship with Wes, even though he used to date the bride-to-be.

While the hero, he's confident and I liked how determined he was to get his revenge. So, what a better way to do that than to show his ex that he's moved on, especially when it comes to the games they play that brings out Wes and Teegan's competitiveness. Will they win and prove their relationship is a good thing? I also liked the close bond the hero shares with his sister because the advice she gives him is advice he definitely needs and I loved how she wasn't about to let his chance at happiness slip by because it's palpable that Teegan is the one.

Overall, Ms. Elle has delivered a wonderful read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was heady and convincing; the romance was full of exquisite heat and passion that had me hoping Wes would realize that Teegan is the right woman for him before it's too late; and the ending had me loving the hero's determination to make things right with the heroine after their relationship goes awry. His words are precious, even if he did need a bit of coaching to get them right. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up perfectly, as these two are made for each other and I'm glad that Wes realized that. I would recommend Anywhere with You by Christina Elle, if you enjoy the best friend's brother trope, the fake relationship trope or books by authors Marissa Clarke, Miranda Liasson, Melanie Shawn and Jeannie Moon.

Excerpt

She peeked a glance up at him, catching mostly only a broad shoulder because of his height. His long arms swung at his sides and his posture stern as he stared at the romantic beach scene in front of them.

They were about thirty feet from the other guests when Wes slipped his hand into hers.

She stiffened on contact and her brain shut down.
Low, so only she could hear, he said, "We have to sell it, remember?"

She nodded, not trusting herself to say anything while her heart did backhand springs in her rib cage. Holy crap. She was totally holding Wes Stevenson’s hand.

And she totally sounded like a teenybopper thinking that.
Be cool, Tee. Be cool.

It was going to be tough though since her version of cool had never been anything close to his. Or anyone else's for that matter.

Standing up straighter, she closed her hand around his, taking in the feel of skin against skin. The closer they got to the already filled area, the more erratic her heartbeat became. She was going to face Juliet, her family, and friends. And they were all going to chastise Teegan for bringing Wes.
Damn. She wished she'd thought about that before this moment. She could've feigned sickness for the entire weekend. What was going around right now? Yellow fever? Malaria? She'd even take a good case of salmonella. Anything to get her out of seeing the judgment in everyone's eyes. The same judgment she saw at every other Delta Gam wedding she'd attended.

With a date, without a date...it didn't matter. It followed Teegan anyway.

The man in question didn't seem bothered by their impending fate. He stood tall and wore a confident smile. Zero nerves radiated off him.

The Ice Box, they'd called him on the football field. Because he was always cool under pressure. Man, what she wouldn't give to have some of that superpower right now.

He squeezed her hand, which made her look up at him. He lifted his chin, gesturing in front of them. She looked toward a receiving line that included the bride and groom.

Juliet and the man she'd left Wes for.

Excellent. Teegan couldn't wait to greet them both on this glorious, fantastic evening.

Why, oh why, had she agreed to this? It would’ve been better not to attend at all, rather than bring Juliet’s ex to Juliet’s wedding.

Oh, God. Her heart was beating at an unhealthy rate. She might faint.

Hey, that wasn’t a bad idea. If she fainted—

The hand attached to hers tightened.

Wes. She was doing this for Wes. Just think about that. This had to be a million times worse for him.

My twin brother’s talked me into a lot of crazy things, but taking his place on a road trip with his girlfriend so he can party with his friends is a whole new level of insanity. What’s even more insane is I somehow find myself agreeing to it—thanks, alcohol, guilt, and bribery. I’m determined to undo the arrangement, but then I meet Gwen, this sexy redheaded hurricane of energy and brains. And then she kisses me. Just like that, I’m driving her up the coast, on our way to a wedding with a mess of complications. With each hour and each stop, I’m falling harder and harder for a woman who doesn’t know my actual name. I’m trying to do the right thing. Or the lesser of the wrong things. All my life I’ve had to clean up my brother’s messes, but for the first time ever, I’ve landed the upper hand in one of our switcheroo schemes. Now I’ve just got to come clean and convince Gwen that I’m the brother she should be with.

In Counterfeit Boyfriend by Cindi Madsen, Ethan is always cleaning up his twin brother's messes, but this time swapping places with his twin brother might actually be worth the trouble. Going on a road trip with his twin's girlfriend, Gwen, is the best time of his life, but when she discovers the truth of his and Evan's deception, will she be able to forgive him or will they lose their shot at happy ever after?

I love sitting down to read a book penned by Ms. Madsen, as she creates such wonderful reads and this is one of her best books yet. Really, the main characters were incredible, the fun plot was spellbinding from start to finish and made this story unputdownable; and the humor-filled dialogue had me smiling or laughing. The way this story started drew me in immediately, and had me loving Ethan right away. He's a good brother and I could understand why he's always cleaning up his twin brother's messes because Evan seems like a bit of a selfish jerk at times. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where this story really takes off, as it had me reading quickly, determined to discover whether Ethan could pull off being his brother enough that Gwen wouldn't get suspicious.

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, as Gwen has serious trust issues because of what happened in her last relationship. Will Ethan be able to win her over and prove that he's someone she can trust? Will Gwen be able to trust Ethan again after she discovers the truth of his deception? However, the dialogue wasn't all intense. Really, there was plenty of playful banter that had me loving the off-the-charts chemistry these two shared.

With the heroine, she's resilient, courageous and I could understand why she needs backup to go home and face everyone after things that happened in her past. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine is that the hero's twin brother's description of her so rings true. She does remind me of a hurricane -- the human variety -- in the way she's always spinning words and has too much energy, especially in the moment when she and the hero first meet or once caffeine enters the mix. While the hero, I couldn't help but sympathize with him, as lying to the heroine isn't easy because he really likes her and doesn't want to hurt her. Will he be able to make things right when the time comes? Furthermore, I enjoyed the hero's confident attitude, his determination to show the heroine a great time on their adventure and the promising future he has that he's worked so hard for. Too bad his brother doesn't have the same attitude when it comes to hard work and being responsible.

Overall, Ms. Madsen has delivered an absolutely captivating and well-written tale in this book where the romance was nicely-detailed, even if it did take a while for this couple's relationship to go from platonic to physical intimacy; and the ending had me loving the hero's determination to win back the heroine because his efforts are endearing and shows that no boyfriend will ever know her as well as he does. Will Gwen be able to put her trust in Ethan again? However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as Ethan and Gwen are so happy together. I would recommend Counterfeit Boyfriend by Cindi Madsen, if you enjoy the mistaken identity trope, a story about a brother doing a favor for his twin brother by switching places or books by authors Melanie Shawn, Samantha Towle, Lila Monroe and Naima Simone.
