Saved by the Firefighter
Templeton Cove #6

Releasing November 1, 2016
Harlequin Superromance

In Saved by the Firefighter (Templeton Cove #6) by Rachel Brimble, Izzy Cooper is struggling to cope with the death of her brother. She's alienated her best friend, Kate, and would rather surround herself in work than deal with her grief. Except her brother's friend, Trent Palmer, just won't give up on helping her, no matter how hard she tries to push him away. However, for Izzy, keeping her distance isn't easy, especially when they're forced together, so she can shoot some photos of him for a firefighter calendar.

Although I haven't read the other books of this series by Ms. Brimble, I found this story could easily be read as a stand-alone. Right from the beginning, what happens between Izzy and Trent in chapter one sets the fast pace of this story and drew me in immediately because not only do Izzy and Trent have really strong chemistry, but this book contains the brother's best friend trope; a trope that I really enjoy. So, of course, I was hooked and wanting to read what obstacles this couple would face on their journey to happy ever after.

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and what happens on the job for Trent as a firefighter. Dealing with losing someone she loved and was very close to was extremely hard for Izzy, and I could understand why she was so determined to isolate herself from everyone. Why couldn't people just give her the chance to grieve in her own time? Yet, in saying that, I could also fathom why Trent was so persistent to help Izzy. Because the heroine had to deal with the truth, of that there was nothing anyone could do to help her brother. Unfortunately, some people are meant to die. There's nothing anyone can do in certain circumstances. It's just their time. Furthermore, the emotions and reactions were hard not to feel along with the main characters, especially Izzy. She has so much grief locked up inside.

I really liked both characters, even though at times, I was frustrated by the indecisiveness they both had towards their growing relationship. If it wasn't Izzy with her abandonment issues and the fact that Trent has such a dangerous job as a firefighter that she can't trust he'll always be around. It was Trent dealing with his own loss and believing that she'd be better off without him because there are no guarantees in life. Couldn't they both come to the realization that life is too short?  However, in saying that, the advice from various secondary characters had me smiling. Both needed to accept the good advice offered, especially when they've already suffered the lose of loved ones taken too early.

Overall, Ms. Brimble has penned a good, emotionally-charged story about healing from lose and finding it in one's heart to forgive. This author also provided a story with a strong romance between the pair, which spilled over onto the pages to do their chemistry justice. The way this story ended had me cheering for this couple's happy ever after. Izzy realizes she can't live without Trent after what happens to him, and I liked that Trent made the right decision when it came to his career; a decision that would keep the heroine  from worrying about him too much. I would recommend Saved by the Firefighter, if you enjoy the brother's best friend trope.

BLURB:
How can she forgive him for what he didn't do?
Photographer Izzy Cooper feels as frozen as her pictures. Trent Palmer might be the hottest firefighter in Templeton Cove, but she can never face him again. Not after he failed to save her brother. But when they're forced together by a calendar shoot, the sparks between them are undeniable.

Izzy knows it's not fair to blame Trent for the tragedy, but opening herself up to loss again isn't something she's prepared to do, no matter how determined Trent is to show her that pain is part of life and that love—their love—can make any suffering bearable.

The security alarm chimed. Someone had stepped inside the studio. Exhaling a heavy breath, Izzy pulled back her shoulders, lifted her head and forced a smile.

"Hi, how can I…” Her heart stopped. Trent Palmer stood just inside the door. “Why are you here?”
His dark green gaze bored relentlessly into hers, his strong jaw set as he reached behind him and shut the door. “I came by to see how you’re doing.”
Traitorous attraction skittered over the surface of her skin before Izzy turned and strode toward the corner she used for staging portrait shots. The fluffy bunnies, huge furry dice and toys she’d used to relax a toddler earlier now felt macabre.
She spun around, clutching a teddy bear. “The same as I was doing yesterday and the day before. I told you I don’t want to see you. I don’t ever want to see you. Why do you keep coming back?”
He came closer, his gaze locked on hers. “You have to talk to me. I was Robbie’s friend. There was nothing—”
“You could do. Fine. I get it, but why do you feel the need to keep coming in here and checking up on me? What do you want me to do? Dance in the street? Kick up my heels at the fairground? God, just leave me alone.”
“There’s a beach party tonight. I want you to come with me.”
She stared. Why him? Why would a man she really liked—a damn firefighter—have to pursue her like she was someone worth pursuing? “No.”
He looked at the equipment covering the desk alongside him. He lifted and replaced a camera, the hunch of his wide shoulders indicating his discomfort. Izzy hated that she drew no satisfaction from that…only sadness.
He turned. “I want you to come and show your face to the people who care about you. Kate said—”
“Kate had no right to say anything to you.” She lifted her chin. “I’m fine.”
"Then come to the beach.”
“No.”
He crossed his arms. “Why not? What good is it doing you, hiding away in here twenty-four-seven?”
“I’m not hiding.” Liar. “My work is better than it’s ever been. I have lots to keep me busy, and I don’t need you or a damn beach party to make me feel better.”
“This isn’t who you are, Iz. You’ve always worked, always been ambitious, but everyone is used to you taking pictures while you play as well as work. Where have you gone? Don’t you think Robbie would’ve wanted you to step out into the sunlight now and then?”
The sound of her brother’s name on Trent’s lips brought the sting of tears to her eyes. “Don’t talk to me about Robbie. He would want me to do whatever I wanted and right now the last thing I want to do is talk to you.” She turned her back to him and tossed the bear into a plastic crate of other props. She sighed. “Please, Trent. Just get out of here.”
“You know as well as I do that Robbie wanted us together. He actively encouraged it.”
“Yeah, he did and look how that turned out.”
His jaw tightened. “Are you saying it was no good? That we were no good? God, Iz, Robbie would’ve loved knowing we finally got together.”
Loss wrapped around her heart making it ache. “Maybe, but he would’ve also seen we were a bad idea together too.”
Hurt flashed in his eyes, before he exhaled heavily. “Look, you might not want to talk to me, but there’s someone else we have to think about.”
She planted her hands on her hips, her body humming with irritation and the urge the grip him by his stupidly large biceps and march him out of her studio. Didn’t he realize he was invading her only place of peace? “Who?”
“Maya Jackson. We have to do this calendar, Iz. We promised. If we don’t set up the shoot soon, it won’t be ready for Christmas. That little girl, her family and Kate are relying on you…us…to do this.”
She tipped her head back and glared at the ceiling. There was no way she’d let down Maya, suffering so acutely with leukemia, any more than she would continue in a relationship with date the firefighter who’d failed to respond quick enough to save her brother. No matter how the results of the ensuing investigation had confirmed it had been a falling beam that killed Robbie at the garage, she had to blame someone or she’d go insane.
The safest person to blame was strong, reliable Trent. A man she’d grown to deeply care for and admire during the four years before Robbie died. A man who knew her and her brother. Knew her home and her life…and who, God damn it, still wanted to know her.
He didn’t deserve her derision; he didn’t deserve everything she threw at him, yet time and again, he became her target. She had to keep his interest at bay. Better still—stop it altogether.

Pull Me Close
The Panic #1
By: Sidney Halston
Releasing October 25, 2016
Loveswept
In Pull Me Close (The Panic #1) by Sidney Halston, a harrowing experience in her past has left Katherine Wilson struggling with all sorts of phobias. She'd rather be holed up in her apartment than out amongst crowds, but there's no way she can miss her sister's engagement party at a nightclub called Panic. No matter how much she wishes she could. Unfortunately, the experience is all too much for her and she finds herself passing out from a panic attack. Can she convince club owner, Nick Mereno, that her reasons for fainting are not what he thinks it is from?
Nick Mereno doesn't have time for women, and certainly not a woman that reminds him of his ex. Yet, there's something about Katherine Wilson that draws him to her, even though his head is screaming for him to stay away from the woman that struggles with several phobias. Can he find a way to help her and prove that falling in love can be enough for her to conquer her fears?
What a powerful and emotional first book of The Panic series Ms. Halston has penned, encompassing a heroine determined not to let her fears win and a hero determined to help her. Right from the beginning, I was hooked with what happens to Katherine. She's been through so much, and yet, she's trying her best to face her fears. Unfortunately, she's not as successful as she would like to be. How is she going to convince Nick that her passing out is from an anxiety attack? Will he even give her a chance to explain?
The dialogue was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine. Her harrowing past has been haunting her for many years, and she knows she needs to overcome it. She can't continue the way she is. But at the same time,  how can she overcome it when everything reminds her of the worst moment of her life? Will Nick be able to help her once he learns some of her past and why certain things cause her to panic? However, the dialogue wasn't all intense. There was certainly some playful dialogue between Nick and Katherine that had me liking this pair every time they were together. Nick doesn't know whether giving Katherine a chance is worth the trouble, yet she pulls him in with her determination to conquer her fears.
As for the heroine, she was an incredible main character. Her courage to overcome her phobias has its up and downs, and I could understand why the negatives made her consider giving up on her plan to get better. Yet, I'm glad that Nick challenged and encouraged her. Honestly, he was a godsend. With the way he helped her fight to overcome various things that scare her everyday. While Nick, he has the weight of his world on his shoulders after the trouble that rocked his family. And although I didn't always agree with how he dealt with things such as his brother and pushing Katherine to step outside her comfort zone, it was totally necessary. Because his brother needed to make Nick realize that he was there to take away some of the pressure the hero was under and Katherine needed all the help she could get to face her fears. Really, he was good for the heroine.
Overall, Ms. Halston has penned a great start to this series where the sex scenes were hot and illustrated the strong chemistry Nick and Katherine had really well. Chemistry that continued to grow with every obstacle they faced until the sexual tension between the pair became too much and spilled over onto the pages in nicely-detailed romantic moments. The way this story ended totally took me by surprise with what happens to Nick, which in turn made Katherine realize that nothing could hold her back from having the hero in her life permanently. I would recommend Pull Me Close by Sidney Halston, if you enjoy a story about a heroine determined to face her fears and a hero willing to help her.

BLURB:
Welcome to Panic, a sultry Miami nightclub where bodies and hearts move to a beat that doesn’t stop at sunrise—the setting for an emotionally charged series from the bestselling author of the Worth the Fight novels.

When Katherine Wilson passes out in the arms of the hottest man she’s ever seen, it’s not because of the lights, the pulsating music, or the crowded dance floor. It’s because she can’t enjoy a night out like a normal person, not with her debilitating anxieties. These panic attacks are going to destroy her life unless she takes control—or gets a helping hand. So after the club’s bad-boy owner personally escorts her home, Katherine feels something urgent and primal awaken inside of her.

Nick Moreno doesn’t need a headache like Katherine. A drug bust has put his father behind bars and forced Nick to take over the daily business of his family’s South Beach nightclub. His head tells him to walk away—but his body has other ideas. Katherine’s vulnerability, her grace and courage, compel him to reach out. And when they kiss, Nick is overcome by desire: to pull her close, and promise that his embrace will always be the safest place on earth.

“Do one thing that scares you every day,” I say to myself as I walk to the elevator.
I keep thinking that if I can get in that stupid elevator, I can go to my sister’s wedding. Because nothing can be worse than being in a tiny steel box held up by a cable. If it malfunctions, either I’ll plummet to my demise or I’ll be stuck inside, helpless and in the dark.
For weeks now I’ve walked over to it every day, pressed the button, and then run back to my apartment when it dings open, like it’s a monster coming to get me. I know that I’m working myself up. I know what reality is, and I understand the extremely low statistical likelihood that any of the things I envision will actually happen. I’m not completely insane. But I also can’t help the fear that bubbles up inside me and distorts my logic.
Today, however, I woke up with a new sense of bravery and determination and I’m going to take advantage of it.
I know that the cable is made of steel and it will not break.
I know that the elevator is in working order.
I know that it takes only 22.9 seconds from the time it closes on the fifth floor to the time it opens in the lobby.
Still, I’m nervous. Less so then previous days, though.
I dial Nico because even with everything that I know, I need someone with me.
“My sweet Katherine,” he says over the music in the background.
“I need you.”
I notice the change in him, even over the phone. “Wait, what? I’ll be right there.”
The fact that he is so quick to rush to my rescue is heartwarming, but I don’t need him physically here, so I clarify quickly. “No, no, no. Stay there. That’s not what I meant. I need you to stay on the line with me.”
“Okay. Hold on a second—I need quiet. I can barely hear you.” I hear the music become quieter and quieter. “All right. What’s going on?”
“If I say the safe word and tell you to call the police or firemen or whatever, just do it, no questions asked, okay?”
“What?” He sounds alarmed. “What the hell is going on, Katherine?”
“I’m getting on the elevator and I’m going to the lobby. If it gets stuck, I need you to call for help.”
“For fuck’s sake, Katherine, you scared the hell out of me.” He lets out a breath. “Okay, I’ll wait on the phone. Or do you want to wait for me to come over? I can be there in ten minutes and do this with you,” he says while I press the button.
“No. I need to do this alone. Also, what good would it do me if you’re stuck in there with me?”
“It’s not going to get stuck,” he says with a chuckle, and I can practically hear him rolling his eyes on the other end of the line.
“So how’s the club tonight?”
“I heard the ding, baby. Stop procrastinating and get inside.”
I look at the open door. The elevator car looks so ominous, and now I don’t know if I can do it.
“Get that cute little ass in the elevator.”
“Never mind—I changed my mind.”
“No. You’ve never called me for this before. You’re obviously feeling good about it. I’m proud of you for doing this.”
As the door starts to close I press the button again, and the closing doors reopen.
“So get inside. You can do this.”
“Nico, I don’t—”
“Yes, you can. Don’t finish that sentence. You’ve done more in the last few weeks than you’ve done in a long time. You can absolutely do this. I know you can. Don’t you want to be free?”
I do. Damn it, I do. I take a step and then another one. My feet feel heavy and my heart is beating a mile a minute. I can hear that he’s breathless too.
Corazón, just roll with it. Get inside,” he says softly.

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: THE BILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR by JESSICA LEMMON

The Billionaire Next Door
Billionaire Bad Boys #2
By: Jessica Lemmon
Releasing October 25, 2016
Forever

In The Billionaire Next Door (Billionaire Bad Boys #2) by Jessica Lemmon, after being screwed over by her now ex-boyfriend and not getting the promotion that should have been hers, Rachel Foster decided to toss in her marketing job and become a bartender instead. She's enjoying the freedom, and isn't in the market for another man yet. But the moment she lays on Taggart Crane, she can't helped but be intrigued, even if their first meeting leaves Tag with the wrong impression of why she's apartment sitting for an older man in the hotel Tag owns.

Taggart 'Tag' Crane could have any woman he wants, but he has one hard and fast rule -- he doesn't do commitment. So, the fact that Rachel isn't impressed by his charms or his Billionaire status has him working extra hard to win her over. With business in the Guest & Restaurant services department of Crane Hotels not doing as well as expected, Tag needs to find a way to turn things around and Rachel may be his only hope. Can he convince her to help and at the same time convince her that his standpoint on happy ever after has begun to change?

Having absolutely loved Tag as a secondary character in the first book of this series called The Billionaire Bachelor, I couldn't wait to discover more about him, and I've got to say that story was everything I'd hoped for and more. Right from the beginning, this book was highly entertaining, fast-paced and I loved how it started. Rachel doesn't know how to tell her parents the truth of what's happened in her life recently, and so she needs advice. But is the person that offers it giving her the right advice?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine. She has major trust issues after what her ex-boyfriend did, yet she gives Tag the benefit of the doubt because of all that he does by trying to win her over. Then there's what happens to Tag's brother that brings the Crane family even closer together. Eli needs them so much, and it's up to Tag and his other brother Reese to stop him from pushing everyone away, which isn't easy. However, there were some light-hearted moments that had me smiling or laughing. The tight friendship Tag has with Lucas was the best. The way Lucas teases Tag about his love life, whether he's found the one and the advice he gives the hero made me really like Lucas.

Both the main characters were riveting, and I looked forward to every moment they conversed. Rachel is strong, brave and I liked how determined she is not to rely on anyone. She needs to move forward with her life after the disaster of her last relationship, and the best way to do that is by not accepting favors from anyone and doing everything possible to get her life back on track. By the way of finding a new job and a new apartment all on her own. While Tag, he's confident, charming and I liked how determined he is to prove he has what it takes to turn things around for Crane Hotels when it comes to their Guest & Restaurant services department. He needs to make every effort to please the Hotel's board members and hiring Rachel is the best decision he's ever made, which is proven with the ideas she comes up with.

Overall, this was an incredible addition to the Billionaire Bad Boys series for Ms. Lemmon where the strong chemistry between Rachel and Tag exploded onto the pages in a nicely-detailed romance. The way this story ended was perfect, as Tag proved his love for Rachel by doing something that he normally avoided. Luckily, everyone at a certain event that he'd normally never attend with a date was charmed by his speech. I would recommend The Billionaire Next Door, if you enjoy sexy Billionaires or a heroine determined to move forward with her life after an ex-boyfriend's betrayal.

“This is so much colder than a cab,” Rachel said through chattering teeth. The bar was probably fifteen blocks from the apartment. What was she thinking agreeing to walk? She couldn’t feel her nose.
“But cleaner,” Tag said. She was currently taking two steps for every one of his, given his gait was longer than hers, even at a leisurely pace.
“I do better when it’s a nice, even seventy degrees.” She buried her chin in her scarf as she watched her boots cut through the gathering snow. “I guess it’ll be a few more months until we see milder temps.”
God. She was hopeless. Walking down the sidewalk next to a gorgeous guy and talking about the weather. But Tag didn’t balk.
“I like extremes,” he said, as if this was perfectly acceptable conversation. “If it’s hot, I like it really hot. If it’s cold, there’d better be snow or it’s a waste. I like the ocean because you can’t see the end of it. If I’m in a forest, I prefer one filled with massive sequoias.”
“Because you can relate to them,” she teased. “Giant.”
He turned his head and smiled and she admired straight, white teeth surrounded by a golden brown beard. He’d pulled his hair down and the light brown waves fell haphazardly over his black coat. Which was so sexy she couldn’t think. Especially since there were snowflakes in the strands. Not that she could blame them. Nestled warmly in those locks wasn’t a bad place to imagine being.
Again, she wondered at her attraction to him. Though he did kind of look like Thor, and while she wasn’t a die-hard comic book fan, she could appreciate the actor in the movie.
“How tall are you?” she asked, mostly to stop her inane train of thought. The more she was around him, the less she understood her basal reaction to him.
“Just under six-six. You’re what? Five-five?”
“Yeah. How’d you do that?”
He shrugged and looked ahead, but she didn’t doubt how he’d done it. He’d likely honed his carnival skills and was stellar at guessing weight and height. It wasn’t hard to imagine him using his intuition to figure out a woman’s weak points so he could attack where she was most sensitive. He’d probably had a ton of practice.
Was that where her concern was coming from? That he’d find her weak spots and use them against her? That’s what Shaun had done, she thought with a token amount of bitterness.
“How’d I do what?” A puff of air came from his lips, buried in his beard. She’d never liked facial hair. Until now, apparently.
“How’d you guess my height?” she shot back, feeling peeved more with herself than him. Lack of sleep, or maybe too much, she wasn’t really sure what to blame her reaction on now. “How’d you know I was a businesswoman before? I’m a great bartender, by the way. I was a bartender for longer than I worked in marketing.” She pushed her hands deeper into her pockets, lamenting not bringing her gloves with her. Her hands were freezing.
“Just observant. I’m good with people,” he said.
She absorbed that for a few seconds.
“What exactly do you do in Guest and Restaurant Services?” She air-quoted those words, which brought her bare hands from her pockets. He noticed.
“Where are your gloves? Do you realize it’s February in Chicago?”
“I forgot them.”
Tag stopped walking, a deep sigh working its way from his wide chest as he tugged off his gloves.
“I’m fine.” But he wasn’t listening. Once he’d had his baseball-mitt sized gloves off, he lifted her smaller, freezing hands to his mouth, cupping them in his palms, and blew on them to warm her fingers. He did this the way he did everything else.
Slowly.
Intentionally.
And looking right at her.
He brushed his lips over her knuckles as a drove of chills shot down her spine and legs. She became fascinated by how soft his beard felt against her freezing skin, and then those chills were replaced with heat. Pooling in her belly, between her thighs, and infusing her face with color.
“Thanks,” she muttered when he let her go. She stuffed her hands into his gloves—they were warm, and after his personal attention, so was she. They finished their walk to Crane Tower, and once they were in the lobby, she put that together with Crane Hotels. “You’re pretty brand loyal aren’t you?”
“Honey, you have no idea.”
