In More Than a Soldier (A Veteran's Heart #2) by Irene Onorato, after she discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her, Cindy Giordano has felt a little lost. Of course, she's angry and may never get over the betrayal, so instead, she's determined to pour all her energy into finding and meeting her brother, Edward. Except a simple meeting leads to so much more when she meets Hank Fleming, a scarred former special forces soldier that has survived a lot and still manages to see the best in life. However, with her ex determined to make her life a living hell, how can Cindy even think about giving another man a chance? Click to read the rest of the review.

There’s more than one way to be a hero . . .

Former Special Forces soldier Hank Fleming is living a safe, quiet life in upstate New York, but there are days he isn’t sure he’s going to make it. The sole survivor of a devastating grenade attack in Afghanistan, he is still scarred, physically and emotionally. He hangs on to his faith and tries to keep moving forward, waiting for the day that something—or someone—can make him feel whole again.

Cindy Giordano is searching too—for her biological family and a fresh start. When her journey to find her brother, Edward, leads to Hank’s front door, she is instantly drawn to Hank . . . and instantly wary. With her ex-fiancé’s betrayal still fresh in her mind, friendship is about all she can muster.

When shadows from Cindy’s past threaten, Hank’s protective instincts shift into high gear, and he realizes everyone has their own battles to fight. But the road to healing would be much sweeter with the right person by his side . . .

Cindy Giordano hurried across the parking lot, threw open the door to
Wallis and Jameson Architectural Designs, and stepped inside. A glance at
the wall clock brought a sigh of relief. Even with traffic nearly gridlocked,
she’d managed to arrive at work a few minutes early.

The receptionist didn’t return her smile.

"Good morning, Chloe. I thought I’d be late for sure. A tractor trailer
was overturned on Parkview and—"

The usually cheerful and perky Chloe sat chewing her bottom lip, and
worry lines creased the area between her brows. She strangled a No. 2
pencil with a nervous twisting motion as she rose to her feet.

"Is something wrong?"

"Ricky said to send you to his office as soon as you got here."

Next to Chloe’s desk, a corridor passed through cubicle city to the far
wall where the passageway split into a T. The table that held the coffee
urn, stacks of Styrofoam cups, and fixings stood strangely silent. A man
peeked over a white partition in her direction but turtled his head back
into concealment when their gazes met.

"What’s going on? Why is it so quiet back there?"

Chloe’s pencil snapped in half with a pop. She flinched. "You’d
better go see Ricky."

"Okay, I’ll do that now."

Rick Jameson’s door stood slightly ajar. Cindy gave a light rap with her
knuckle and pushed it open more. "You wanted to see me?"

"Yes, please come in, close the door, and have a seat." He motioned to
a leather armchair.

Cindy sat with hands folded atop her purse. "What’s up, Ricky? Why
the hangdog look, and why’s everyone so quiet this morning? It’s like a
tomb out there in the cubes."

The boss ran a hand over his salt and pepper hair. "There’s no decent
way to segue into this, so I’ll just come out with it. You’re a good kid, and
I like you. But, I’ve got to cut back on staff, and I’m going to have to let
you go. Sorry, kiddo."

"Have I done something wrong?"

"This has nothing to do with your performance. I couldn’t be more
pleased. We’re in a bit of a slump and not making enough money right now.
We decided to lay off the person with the least seniority. Unfortunately,
that happens to be you. Let me know if you need a reference for your next
job." He slid an envelope across the table.

Cindy picked it up. "What’s this?"

"It’s your final paycheck and a little something extra to let you know
how sorry I am."

She tucked the envelope into her purse, stood and extended an arm
across the desk.

Sadness filled her boss’s eyes as he cupped her hand between his.

"Thanks for giving me a job, Ricky. It’s been nice working for you.
You’re a good man."

His lips lifted into a frail smile. "Right now, I don’t feel like
such a good guy."

"Well, you are." Cindy went to the door, opened it and looked back
before stepping through. "Take care."

Irene Onorato was born and raised in Bronx, New York. Her father, a first-generation American whose parents were born in Italy, was an Army veteran who had served with the 178th combat engineers during WWII. He told numerous stories of battles, hardships, tragedies and triumphs. The glimpses he gave into the hearts of many American warriors would later become the inspiration for much of Irene’s writings.

In 1972, a few months after graduating high school, Irene met James Onorato, a soldier who had just returned from Vietnam. After dating two weeks, they married, raised three children, and are still happily married today.

Irene and James, both radiation protection technicians, retired from the nuclear power industry in 2014 and now reside in Louisiana. Readers can visit Irene’s website at ireneonorato.com, and find her on Facebook.

Soldiers...

I can’t help but love them. My father, brother, husband, and son all served in the U.S. Army. When I first started writing, it seemed quite natural for the heroes in my stories to be active or former military men.

More Than a Soldier, my latest novel, features a wounded hero who was the sole survivor in an RPG attack. Despite losing an eye and the hearing in one ear, Hank Fleming maintains a positive attitude and is determined to live his life to the fullest. Now medically discharged from the Army, Hank meets Cindy Giordano, his foster brother’s biological sister, and falls hard for her.

The road to happily-ever-after is paved with plenty of potholes. For Hank, latent PTSD manifests itself in terrible dreams that make him relive the day of the explosion and mourn the deaths of the men who were killed. And for Cindy, betrayal by a former fiancé keeps her heart locked up tightly. Hank hopes he is the key that will free Cindy and allow her to love again.

More Than a Soldier is the second book in the Veteran’s Heart series. Though a stand-alone novel, characters from A Soldier Finds His Way are carried over and several new ones are introduced.

So, what was my inspiration for writing about a wounded warrior with PTSD? As a child my room was next to my parent’s bedroom. Dad worked nights and slept during the day. I would often hear him cry out in his sleep, reliving the horrors of WWII. For him, sleep opened a gateway to a forever war. Lodged in the vertebra in the back of his neck he carried an inoperable piece of shrapnel. While the headaches it initially caused had disappeared over the years, the protruding lump served as a reminder of the battles he’d fought and the men he’d served beside.

More Than a Soldier cannot erase the ongoing trauma my father lived, but it serves as a reminder to me—and hopefully others—of the sacrifice of our military. And in some small way as a tribute to my dad and the hero he was.

REVIEW: TEMPTED BY THE BRIDESMAID by ANNIE O'NEIL

Tempted by a Bridesmaid
Italian Royals #1
By: Annie O'Neil
Releasing July 24th, 2017
Harlequin

In Tempted by the Bridesmaid (Italian Royals #1) by Annie O'Neil, Francesca 'Fran' Martinelli will do anything to save her best friend from marrying a man that would cheat on her. However, it puts her at odds with brooding Italian surgeon Luca Montovano since he doesn't approve of what she does to stop the wedding. What's worse, she finds herself his niece's new therapist when she does a favor for her best friend. Will Francesca be able to convince Luca that she's not all bad, or will their differences keep them from achieving the forever after they both desperately need to be completely happy in life?

Ms. O'Neil always pens fantastic medical romances that entertain me from start to finish, and this story did exactly the same due to the main characters and the fact that they're at odds because of what the heroine did for her best friend at the woman's wedding. Certainly, she did the right thing and I liked how Francesca stuck by her decision and didn't allow the hero to make her feel bad about the choice she made. The way this story started sets the fast-pace of the story, and I liked how things become even more interesting once the heroine discovers who she'll be working for. Will Luca finally realize that Francesca isn't all bad?

As for the dialogue, I loved every moment the hero and heroine conversed, as Luca finds it harder and harder to resist Francesca, even though he believes he doesn't deserve happiness after what happened to his family and how he blames himself for the tragedy. Moreover, the dialogue was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially the hero and it made me want to cry for him due to what happened to his niece. Yet, the young girl is resilient and I liked how determined she is not to allow the fact that she's in a wheelchair to get her down. However, what I liked most about this couple is how much of a challenge the heroine provides the hero. She doesn't give up on what she believes in or wants, even though Luca does everything possible to keep her at a distance.

Luca has been through so much in his past and it's what makes him such an intriguing hero. He feels so much guilt, because of what happened to his family, yet he's determined to make things the best he can for his niece. Believing she deserves to find a chance to be more independent and I liked how Francesca helps her do that. However, what I liked most is that Luca would do anything to save the mountainside clinic he runs. Will he be able to save it before time runs out? While the heroine, she was just as good as the hero and had me completely captivated, because of how much she helps Luca's niece and how good of a therapist she is for other patients at the clinic. I also liked that she's not afraid to dive in and help, even though Luca is likely to have problems with her interfering, which is proven in one instance where she actually does good, but he doesn't appreciate her ability to make the patient feel warm and welcome when said patient was so standoffish.

Overall, Ms. O'Neil has penned another really good medical romance in this book where the chemistry was strong; the romance wonderful in the way they go from frenemies with benefits to achieving their happy ever after once Luca realizes how much in love he is with the heroine; and the ending wrapped this story up perfectly because of what Francesca wants to do to help Luca and because of how far this couple have come in their relationship.

I would recommend Tempted by the Bridesmaid by Annie O'Neil, if you enjoy the enemy to lovers trope, the opposites attract trope or books by authors Tina Beckett, Amy Ruttan or Amalie Berlin. Also, be sure to check out the next book of this duet (Claiming his Pregnant Princess), because the heroine's best friend was an absolute delight and is the heroine in it and certainly deserves her own chance at forever love after what she endured in this book.

BLURB
A woman to unlock his heart? The last time brooding Italian surgeon Luca Montovano saw bubbly heiress Francesca Martinelli was at his best friend's failed wedding. Sparks flew then, and now she's made a surprise appearance at his mountaintop clinic, bringing a much-needed whirlwind of laughter!

Aristocratic Luca just wants to be left alone to care for his orphaned niece. The scars on his face reach right to his heart, and he's learned to push people away. Until Fran forces him to see the world through her eyes!

BLOG TOUR - REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: THE HOOK UP by TAWNA FENSKE

About the Book:

Ellie Sanders is over the fairytale, thank you very much. Content with her booming career as a purveyor of Madame Butterfly pleasure aids, she doesn’t need a man for anything—except maybe marketing tips. And, okay, a few fun nights with something that doesn’t require batteries.

Love, marriage, and family aren’t in the cards for Tyler Hendrix. Period. The Navy helped Ty put his tumultuous childhood behind him, but when a sexy single mom walks through the First Impressions door looking to take her business to the next level, he feels his carefully constructed “never-get-attached” walls crack.

As Ty and Ellie maneuver through a minefield of wardrobe malfunctions, plumbing mishaps, and the world’s most awkward accidental dirty talk, discovering they have more in common than scorching sexual attraction threatens to crumble Ty’s walls for good…

In The Hook Up (First Impressions #3) by Tawna Fenske, Tyler Hendrix is adamant he'll never settle down and get married, but the moment he meets single mom Ellie Sanders he's questioning his objection to love, family and marriage. However, Ellie has already been let down before by her ex, and isn't interested in giving happy ever after another try. Can Ty convince her to take a chance on him, or will their chance at forever love not happen?

Ms. Fenske delivers a story that's engrossing, fast-paced and provides plenty of moments that had me laughing or smiling in this book, especially with the way it started. Ellie is looking for ways to help her business be more successful and the tips Tyler gives her are beneficial once they get on the same track of what sort of business she runs. Let's just say -- do sex toys and bowling balls really have so much in common?

As for the dialogue, it was well-written and had me hooked due to the combination of intense and teasing banter. Everything about it -- the main characters back stories, the interactions Ty and Ellie had with the secondary characters and the growing relationship between this couple entertained me from start to finish. So much so that I could not put this book down, because I wanted to discover more about the main characters and whether Ty would be able win Ellie over since her ex did so wrong by her and doesn't make it easy for her to put her trust in another man, especially a man that doesn't believe happy ever after is for him after his tumultuous childhood.

Both the main characters are relatable, likeable and I loved every moment they conversed, most especially the moment they met and the confusion there is about what they're discussing. Moreover, the heroine is strong, brave and I liked her determination to make her business a success. I also liked her enthusiasm and that she was willing to help Ty when he needed it. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine is how she went after what she wanted and what she wanted was Ty, even knowing that he didn't believe happy ever after was for him. While the hero, he had a tough childhood and it's understandable why he doesn't do relationships and why he doesn't like to talk about his past. I also liked the growing bond between Ty and the heroine's son. They were adorable together, especially when Ty does his best not to cuss in front of the young boy and says some very interesting phrases instead. Yet, what I liked most about the hero was how determined he was to give a relationship between him and Ellie a chance. Certainly, she was good for him.

Overall, Ms. Fenske has penned a delightful read in this book where the chemistry was strong, the romance sizzling and the ending had me completely charmed by what Ty did to win Ellie back, even though the hero doesn't enjoy standing up in front of people and speaking. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped everything up perfectly, because of how far Ty and Ellie have come in their relationship. What a wonderful surprise! I would recommend The Hook Up by Tawna Fenske, if you enjoy second chance romances or books by authors Jennifer Blackwood, Kadie Scott, Teri Anne Stanley or Donna Michaels.

“Uh-huh,” Ellie said, not sure where this was headed.
“Ever think about dating again?”
Ellie shrugged and tried to keep her expression casual. “Sometimes. Starting a relationship is tough when you have a kid.”
“Who said anything about a relationship? I’m talking about a hookup.”
“You mean like a fling?” Ellie noticed her voice sounded more intrigued than scandalized.
“Sure! Just dipping your toe in the water again.”
She smiled and glanced down at her hands. “It’s not my toe that’s out of practice.”
Miriam laughed and sipped her grape juice. “When’s the last time you tried the casual thing?”
“Um, that would be never.”
“Ever?”
“Nope.” Ellie shook her head and tried not to be embarrassed. “Not even before I met Chuck.”
“Seriously?” Miriam gaped at her. “Girl, we’ve gotta get you laid!”
Ellie rolled her eyes, even though the idea shot tiny little sparks of excitement through her veins. “Why do you think I sell vibrators for a living?”
“Good point.” Miriam grinned. “But the toys you use with a partner are a lot more fun.”
“I’ll have to take your word for it.”
Miriam studied her, her expression calculating. “You’re not interested in a relationship?”
“Not really.” Ellie shook her head and tried not to let her smile falter. Not to let her mind wander too far down the path that started with her ex-husband leaving and ended with Ellie swearing she’d never go through that kind of heartache again.
She shrugged and met her sister-in-law’s gaze. “I don’t think I’m ready for a boyfriend. Even that word sounds so stupid. Like I’m in fourth grade expecting someone to pull my pigtails or hand me a note with little checkboxes.”
Miriam laughed. “Don’t knock hair-pulling as a sign of affection.”
“Please don’t feel like you need to elaborate,” Ellie said. “That’s my brother you’re getting kinky with.”
“Who said anything about kink? He spent the whole first trimester holding my hair back while I hurled.”
“Oh.” Not for the first time, Ellie wondered if she spent entirely too much time immersed in the language of sexual aids. “Well, anyway, I’m not after a relationship. Not after what I went through with Chuck.”
“But you’d be game for a fling?”
Ellie glanced down the hall. Even though she heard Jason and Henry singing the Batman theme song at full volume, she still lowered her voice to answer the question. “Maybe a fling.”
Miriam grinned. “So you want me to keep an eye out for a suitable candidate?”
Ellie eyed her sister-in-law with a growing sense of wariness. And a tiny bit of giddiness. But mostly wariness. “Why do I sense you’ve already got someone in mind?”
Miriam’s grin turned to a smirk, and Ellie didn’t have to ask what she was thinking. She had a hunch. And she had a hunch she’d be seeing him on Tuesday evening.

REVIEW: RAW NEED by CHERRIE LYNN

Raw Need
Larson Brothers #2
By: Cherrie Lynn
Releasing June 27th, 2017
Swerve

In Raw Need (Larson Brothers #2) by Cherrie Lynn, Rowan Dugas has been struggling since the death of her husband and then soon after finding out she was pregnant with his baby. But somehow meeting her favorite singer Zane Larson has begun to help her heal a little, especially when she listens to his music. When he asks her to go on tour with him, she's reluctant at first, but with the problems she's having with her in-laws, she knows it's the only way to escape her troubles. However, both know that their relationship can't last when she's still grieving her husband. Will Zane be able to find a way to convince Rowan to give him a chance at happy ever after, or will the trouble her in-laws are determined to cause enough to send her running from the one man that has managed to make her happy again?

Ms. Lynn is an author whose books I've been reading since she released her very first story, and she's an author that I've come to be completely riveted by her style of writing. Because her characters have such emotionally-intense back stories, are thoroughly entertaining and her dialogue is always engaging, especially when her characters have already lost so much like Rowan and could lose more if they don't make the right decisions. The way this story started had me smiling and hoping everything goes right for Rowan. Everything from finding the right outfit to having a wonderful night out, as she needs a little fun in her life after her lose. Will everything go right for her?

With the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and everything the heroine goes through with a singer who doesn't think she fits into Zane's life and the way her in-laws treat her, especially her mother-in-law; a woman that's determined to keep Rowan in line with their expectations for her life. Moreover, I liked how strong and brave the heroine was in standing up for herself, and not giving in to her mother-in-law's undignified behavior. I also liked how determined she was to take control of her life and do something that made her feel alive again, instead of continuing to wallow in her grief. But what I liked most of all is that she gave Zane a chance, as he's definitely good for her when everything else in her life feels like it's falling apart.

While Zane, he's done well for himself and has overcome so much in his past. Music and the tight bond he has with his brothers are the only two things that saved him from his rough childhood and I liked the way he made the heroine feel better with his music and the songs he told her about. I also liked how he won the heroine over by not pressuring her like everyone else in her life seemed to be doing, even though he wanted her badly and their chemistry was fierce.

Overall, Ms. Lynn has penned a really good read in this book where the romance was explosive and the secondary characters have me looking forward to the next book, especially since the hero will be Damien, the Larson brother wrapped up in so much mystery that makes this reader wants to know more about him. The way this story ended had me concerned for the heroine because of what she goes through. Yet, how things turned out for her and Zane was heartwarming, as some of the secondary characters finally did what was right for Rowan. Certainly, she deserved a second chance at love. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up wonderfully with Zane's surprise for the heroine. I would recommend Raw Need by Cherrie Lynn, if you enjoy second chance romances or books by authors Rachel Van Dyken, Michelle A. Valentine, Kylie Scott or Jamie Shaw.

BLURB

This life—and an escape through music—was supposed to be everything he’s ever wanted, but after meeting Rowan, Zane’s no longer sure…

Soon after her husband’s death, Rowan Dugas learned she was pregnant. With grief and uncertainty her only companions, Rowan was only able to find an escape through music; specifically Zane Larson’s hypnotic voice. But after meeting the sexy lead singer of her favorite band, Rowan can hardly believe he’s interested in her. But Zane also has a painful connection to her unborn child - Zane's brother is responsible for her husband's death.

Torn between the only family she has left, and a life with Zane unlike anything she’s dared to dream about, Rowan’s decision will change her fate forever. This new title from New York Times bestselling author Cherrie Lynn is a heart wrenching, emotionally intense story that will leave readers breathless.

After a painful divorce, the busy baby doc is about to realize his own dream of becoming a father when the baby’s beautiful estranged aunt turns up. LOVE IN THE NURSERY

He took a moment to admire her. She wore the pretty white dress
she’d worn that night when they’d met in the hotel restaurant and he
had been determined to send her packing. A lot had changed since
then. Lucky me, he mused as he took the music box out of her hands.

He placed it on the chest of drawers and restarted the song.

As "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" started to play again, he
reached out his hand to her. "May I have this dance?"

For a moment, it appeared her breath halted before she took his
hand. "Yes. Yes," she repeated as if she had agreed to more than just
a dance.

They settled against one another as they waltzed around the nursery
in small steps, a couple forward and backward since there was little
open space. "We need a bigger room," he said as they bumped
into the armoire.

"This is fine," she whispered. She began to softly sing the lyrics
to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

He smiled. He loved for her to sing to him, and as she sang about
dreams coming true, he glanced at the picture of himself holding
John Aaron. The baby was a dream come true, and so was the woman
in his arms. He sensed a shift in her as she slid her hand from his and
roped both of her arms around his neck as they swayed to the music.

"We should call it a night," he murmured.

He shut off the light in the nursery as they headed across the hall
to their bedroom . . .

What’s Cole Younger Got To Do With It?

In NOT THROUGH LOVING YOU, the heroine, Lia Montgomery, a country music singer/ songwriter, is a fangirl of the Old West and outlaws, especially Cole Younger. This began when she was working on music for a documentary of the Old West and she wrote a song "The Outlaw in My Arms" about Cole. Being a true fangirl, she knows everything about his life.

This brings some humor to the book as the hero, pediatrician Aaron Kendall thinks the Cole/Wild West thing is absurd. Plus it reinforces his belief that he has nothing in common with Lia. The next thing he knows she’s adding touches of the Old West to his house, buys the baby (her nephew whom he is adopting) cowboy boots and suggest they name the baby, Cole. That will be over Aaron’s dead body…

I have to admit I did pass my favoritism of Cole Younger onto my character. A long time ago, I did some in-depth research of the James-Younger gang for a book I was writing. Jesse and Frank James were the most famous, but aside from being outlaws, they were serious, devout sons of a Baptist preacher. One side note, quiet Frank was an avid reader. He was never without a book in his saddlebag and he often quoted Shakespeare.

To me, Cole seemed to be the kind of outlaw a girl would like to meet. Cole came from a large affluent family and he was considered the "life of the party." He loved to have fun. A flirtatious ladies man, he was a favorite with women. He was outgoing and charming, but he never married. It was rumored he fathered a daughter by the female outlaw, Belle Starr.

After the Northfield bank robbery, Cole spent a couple of decades in prison where he became a medical attendant, working in the prison infirmary, taking care of the sick. (Lia points that out to Aaron since he’s a doctor.) He was a model prisoner who was paroled. His brothers were all dead. John was killed by a Pinkerton agent, Bob died in prison, and broken-hearted Jim committed suicide after his release. Jesse James had been killed and Frank, acquitted of all crimes, was living on the James farm with his family. Cole and Frank reunited and put together the James-Younger Wild West show. Later, Cole, who liked show business, became something of a "motivational" speaker. He traveled the country, presenting lectures on "What My Life Has Taught Me." He also wrote his autobiography entitled Cole Younger, Himself. Cole died peacefully at home in March 1916. He was seventy-two and still carried 11 bullets in his body from his outlaw days.

You’ll have to read the book to see how Aaron comes to terms with all things Western.
