BLOG TOUR - REVIEW: BETTING THE SCOT by JENNIFER TRETHEWEY

Betting the Scot

Declan Sinclair is a Highlander who believes his dreams never lie. When he spots Caya at a public house, he knows instantly she is the woman in his dreams—his future wife. Though her brother had promised never to gamble again, he engages Declan in a card game—and the prize is the lovely Caya.

Caya Pendarvis has no time for childish things like dreams or fairy-tales or love. She’s the sacrificial lamb on her way to the far north of Scotland to wed a wealthy merchant in exchange for settling her brother’s gambling debts.

Winning at cards is one of the many things Declan Sinclair does well. Unfortunately, the ability to court a woman—a talent he lacks—is the only skill he desperately needs to win Caya’s heart.

In Betting the Scot (The Highlanders of Balforss #2) by Jennifer Trethewey, Declan Sinclair recognizes the woman from his dreams the moment he sees her. However, finding a way to convince her to give him a chance seems impossible until her brother offers her as the prize in a card game. Will Declan be able to win Caya Pendarvis over or will she walk away from the one man she could be truly happy with?

What a fantastic and captivating read Ms. Trethewey has delivered in this second book of her Highlanders of Balforss series where the main characters and dialogue entertained me from start to finish and had me reading quickly, determined to discover how things would turn out for Declan and Caya. Since from the moment they meet, it's palpable that Caya believing Declan is her best hope is going to lead to trouble. Will her brother ever stop betraying her?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine, because she's been treated by her brother like she's a prize that her sibling can continue to gamble away to the highest bidder. Will her brother ever do right by her? Moreover, the main characters were wonderful and I enjoyed the obstacles they had to overcome to be together. Will the heroine realize that Declan is the one she wants before it's too late? Will Declan be able to prove to Caya that everything that happens isn't her fault and that he wants to marry her no matter what?

With the main characters, the heroine is strong and brave in giving Declan a chance, considering the fact that if she can't trust her own brother, how is she supposed to trust anyone else? I also liked how kind and caring she is and that she would do anything to help someone, which is proven by what she does that has people thinking she's evil. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine is how well she fit in with Declan's family and that they were willing to do anything to make her time with them as pleasant as possible. While the hero, he's confident, hard-working and I liked how determined he was to win the heroine over, even though that isn't easy. I also liked the close bond the hero shared with his family, especially his cousins because they were willing to help him any way they could. Then again, they like to tease each other too.

Overall, Ms. Trethewey has penned an absolutely delightful read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong; the romance was wonderful and showed how good Declan and Caya are together; and the ending had me worried for the main characters, but had me loving that the secondary characters had Declan's back when it came to what they needed to do to make certain the heroine was safe. Yet, what I liked most of all about the ending is how what happens brings this couple even closer. No way will Caya and Declan let anyone hold them back from being together any longer. I would recommend Betting the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey, if you enjoy Historical Romances or books by authors Heather McCollum, Julia London, Vanessa Kelly and Michelle McLean.

She smiled. “I live here now. I’m your wife.”

His mouth hung open. Did he not believe her? Did he not understand her? Or had he changed his mind? “You do still want me to be your wife, don’t you?”

An odd look appeared on Declan’s face. One she couldn’t interpret. “Well now,” he said. “That all depends.”

“Depends on what?” Oh, God. Was he changing his mind? Did he wake up and realize she was a fool for trying to save her brother?

“I ken you love me, but I need a wife who will trust me,” he said and took a step closer. “I ken it’s a hard thing for you to trust given all the lies your brother had told you. And me, I was wrong to take you from him the way I did. I gave more thought to my daft dreams than I did for your happiness and I’m sorry for that, but…”

“But what?” Hot tears pricked at the corners of her eyes.

“When I thought you were lost to me, when I thought I’d never see you again, I knew that I loved you more than my own life. I was ready to toss my life away to save you. That’s how much I want you, need you, love you.” He held out his hand just like that fateful morning in front of the Crown Tavern. “So, I’m asking you, do you trust me?”

She stiffened. She was the New Yorker, used to being direct and dealing with people who got in her face. Yet when Noah did it, it unnerved her. “I’m not avoiding you.” Her pitch was a half-step high, the trait of a liar.

“We’ve got to talk about last night.”

She smacked her bread together and turned to face him, using her sandwich as a shield. She straightened her pose, planted her feet apart, and hoped the Wonder Woman stance would give her Amazonian strength. “Last night was a mistake.”

His dark-blue eyes flashed with a determination that told her he disagreed. Her stomach clenched, and the strength she sought eluded her. Instead she stood there, too frightened to move and too weak to stop where they were going.

He came up on her slowly, as if he knew she’d spook and scatter at any sudden movement. He reached out and tucked one blond curl behind her ear. His fingers skimmed her skin. Goose bumps blossomed down her neck, her spine, to her toenails.

“And it won’t happen again,” she said with as much conviction as she could muster. “End of discussion.” Her voice squeaked, again betraying her, though no worse than the rest of her body.

He leaned in until his lips were inches from hers. Her breathing hitched. She should have put some distance between them, acres of distance, but her feet stuck to the floor. Her eyes flickered to his lips. They’d been so soft last night and were so close right now. One little taste wouldn’t hurt, would it? She reflexively licked hers.

He moved in. His breath trailed her cheek, and his lips hovered at the edge of her jaw, just below her earlobe. She arched her neck back, giving him more access, then shivered, closed her eyes, and waited to feel his lips on her neck.

Instead, his breath fanned her ear. “Liar,” he whispered. Then he was gone.

BLOG TOUR - REVIEW: WANTED FOR LIFE by ALLISON B. HANSON

Wanted for Life
Love Under Fire #2
By Allison B. Hanson
Releasing April 23rd, 2018
Entangled Publishing

Deputy Marshal Angel Larson has been set up and accused of murder. On the run, desperate to stay one step ahead of the law and the real killer, she turns to a former protectee in a small town—the man who's haunted her dreams...and fantasies...ever since.

Former DEA agent Colton Williamson misses the action of his past life since entering witness protection as a high school math teacher. He also misses Angel, who refused to join him in his new life. Now it’s Angel who’s in trouble, and Colton can’t help but be there for her—before it's too late.

But the killer may be closer to them than they think.

In Wanted for Life (Love Under Fire #2) by Allison B. Hanson, Deputy Marshal Angel Larson is in big trouble. Knowing she'll be accused of murder if she's found at the scene of the crime, she decides to go on the run. The only safe place she can think of is with Former DEA agent Colton Williamson, a man that entered the witness protection program in order to testify against a really evil man. Will Colton be able to convince Angel that they're meant to be together this time around or will they lose their shot at happy ever after?

What an absolutely entertaining, fast-paced, thrilling ride Ms. Hanson takes readers on this second book of her Love Under Fire series, which opened brilliantly with what's happened and the heroine doing the only thing she can. Will she be able to find a safe place where she can figure out who is setting her up? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time that I absolutely loved because these two have history. Will Colton be willing to help her?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and everything these two go through on their journey to happy ever after. Will the heroine discover who is setting her up? Moreover, both the main characters are fantastic, especially since these two shared so much in the past; the hero has gone from being an DEA agent to being someone that still helps people but not as law enforcement; and the heroine is in really big trouble that she may not be able to get out of.

With the heroine, she's resilient, courageous and I liked how determined she was to clear her name, even though there are moments when she could find herself in trouble. I also liked how she's managed to overcome the hard times in her life to be a Deputy Marshal. Certainly, she didn't have it easy with what happened to her and her parents at the hand of someone that should have loved her. While the hero, he's been through a lot and I liked how he's handled everything, even though it wasn't easy for him to walk away from his old life. Also, he's confident; good at helping people, which is proven by what he does for one of the secondary characters; and I liked how determined he was to help the heroine, even though convincing her to accept his help isn't going to be easy.

Overall, Ms. Hanson has delivered a wild and captivating read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was heady and convincing; the romance was special and had me glad these two have a second shot at happy ever after; and the ending had me worried for the main characters because of the final battle they face against the person that set up the heroine, but had me loving that they manage to come out on top. Then again, trusting people is something the heroine needs to get used to, especially when she has a few people that care about her and want things to be made right for her. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely because the hero and heroine are so happy together. I would recommend Wanted for Life by Allison B. Hanson, if you enjoy romantic suspense, the second chance romance trope or books by authors Cathy Skendrovich, Sheryl Nantus, Julie Castle and Tonya Burrows.

Angel hadn’t been sure what kind of reception to expect from Colton. Having a gun pulled on her had not been outside the realm of possibility. Still, seeing a Glock 19 pistol instantly appear in his hand made her pulse jump and her own hands reach for the sky.
She only hoped she’d be able to explain before he pulled the trigger.
“You broke my guard dog,” he said.
A cautious spurt of relief went through her. “I didn’t break him. He works fine. He just loves me. I think he knows I picked him when you said he was scrawny.”
When Colton had found out he was destined for WITSEC, he'd decided he wanted a companion. She’d suggested a puppy. Later, when he asked her to go into the program with him, she'd realized he wanted more in a companion than long walks and playing catch.
He’d wanted to spend the rest of his life with someone, and okay, she’d panicked.
“Not only did you eat my shoes, but you picked a girl over me?” He frowned at the dog, who didn’t look the slightest bit remorseful.
Colton’s Glock was still leveled on her, so she stayed still with her hands in the air. “I seem to remember telling you not to purchase a firearm.”
He looked down at the pistol and shrugged. "Old habits."
“Your new identification is good, but an overzealous background check could turn up inconsistencies,” she reminded him.
She’d guessed right away his new identity wouldn’t sit well with him. She’d even spoken to his handler about it. The man needed constant action. He would say it was because he didn’t like being bored, but that was BS.
She knew the real reason why he lived for danger.
“Are you going to let me in, or should I leave?” she asked, no longer alarmed by the gun. He might be really angry at her, but he wouldn’t shoot her. At least, she didn’t think so.
He’d probably been pissed after she’d left without a word in the middle of the night, but, surely, he was over that by now. No doubt, she was the only one still wondering what might have happened if she’d stayed...
“That depends," he said. "Are you going to kill me, too?”
He knew her better than that. They’d spent months together, and she’d let him in behind her walls, where no one else was permitted. Granted, she hadn’t told him about her past—she didn’t talk about that, ever—but she’d told him enough for him to know that she would have gladly put herself in front of that knife to stop someone from killing the person she was protecting.
There had been a time when she wasn’t sure she was cut out for that level of duty, but it had been tested, and she'd proven she would always do the right thing when it came right down to it.
"Seriously?" She made a sound of annoyance and rolled her eyes.
She’d pinned everything on his willingness to help her. Her Plan B was to look for an abandoned property and hide out until things died down. But with the level of media coverage the story was getting, that could take months. Or longer.
Besides, abandoned properties usually contained things like rats and spiders. No thanks. She’d go up against a bad guy any day, but a spider? Hell, no.
She needed Colton. In more ways than one. But she was determined to keep things professional this time.
She let out a breath when he lowered the Glock.
“Get in here,” he muttered.
Whether he meant her or the dog she wasn’t sure, but both of them hightailed it into the house.

One very early morning, Allison B. Hanson woke up with a conversation going on in her head.  It wasn’t so much a dream as being forced awake by her imagination. Unable to go back to sleep, she gave in, went to the computer, and began writing.  Years later it still hasn’t stopped.

Allison lives near Hershey, Pennsylvania. Her contemporary romances include paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery suspense.  She enjoys candy immensely, as well as long motorcycle rides, running and reading.

In Love at Last by Claudia Connor, jilted bride Clare Franklin decides to still go on her honeymoon anyway. Luckily, she's not at the stage where she thinks all men are jerks because meeting veterinarian Deacon Montgomery is a good way to help her move on from her ex-fiancé and his words of 'I'm in love with someone else.' However, when she returns home and soon learns that she's pregnant, she knows she needs to tell Deacon. Will Deacon be happy when discovers her surprise or will they lose their shot at happy ever after?

Ms. Connor delivers a fantastic read in this book and I loved how it started because the heroine is so brave when it comes to what happens and then going on her honeymoon on her own. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time that I loved because there's instant chemistry between them and Deacon is such a good listener. In fact, Clare is quite lucky to meet Deacon when she does to show her that not all men are jerks since she's been so unlucky in love.

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters backs stories, but I liked the obstacles these two faced on their journey to happy ever after including whether Clare will ever be able to give Deacon a chance, especially when she's so wary of falling for another man and having her heart broken again. Will Deacon be able to prove to Clare that he wants her forever? Furthermore, both the main characters were wonderful and I loved their growing relationship because Deacon is good for Clare. He's a good dad, smart, hard-working and I loved how determined he was to win the heroine over, even though that doesn't seem easy at times, especially when she learns something about his past that he was afraid to tell her.

While the heroine, she's strong, brave and I liked that she gave the hero a chance, even though she has every right to be worried that another relationship may end in heartbreak. I also liked how good of a mother she is, despite the fact that it isn't easy being a first-time mom. Luckily though, she has great support in two of the secondary characters that would do anything for her. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine was how she fit in with Deacon's family. Although, his sister can be a bit much and doesn't know how to mind her own business when it comes to pushing Deacon on his relationship with Clare.

Overall, Ms. Connor has delivered a really good read in this book where the chemistry between Deacon and Clare was powerful; the romance delightful; and the ending had me cheering for this couple's happy ever after, as Clare finally realizes what she wants and what she wants is a future with Deacon and their children. I would recommend Love at Last by Claudia Connor, if you enjoy the surprise pregnancy trope, the second chance romance trope, or books by authors Devney Perry, Kristen Proby, Natasha Madison and Mia Sheridan.

Excerpt

His wide, warm palm grazed her lower back as they wove their way through the tables to the exit. They crossed over the water garden in silence, slowing as they reached a fork in the path.

“Which way?” Deacon asked. “I’ll walk you back.”
“That’s sweet, but you really don’t have to. It’s a five-star resort, not downtown Los Angeles.”

Deacon kept walking. “True. But you know, I took you to dinner and all.”

She arched a brow at him. “It’s also an all-inclusive resort. Maybe I took you.”

“Maybe you did.”

He flashed her that slightly lopsided grin that hit her right in the chest. She conceded to the walk, and together, they followed the brick path. The resort was dark, but lights along the sidewalk lit the path and shined up the skinny gray trunks of the swaying palms. It was quiet, and when they didn’t pass even one other person, she was glad he was walking her back.

She slowed as they came to the breezeway leading to her building and pointed up the steps to the second floor. “I’m up there, so…”

Deacon started up the steps. “I’ll walk you to the door. I’m funny like that.”

She probably should have said no, insisted that she could make it to her door on her own. Because of course she could. But she didn’t insist, just followed enormously glad she’d removed the HONEYMOON banner from her door.

They reached her room, and she turned to face him. Just the two of them now, up here, alone at her door. She felt a slight buzzing in her head that had nothing to do with alcohol.

“Well, Clare of the here and now.”

She rolled her eyes at the reminder of her earlier word-vomit ramble. “It was nice to meet you.” She stuck out her hand, hoping it wasn’t sweaty.

“It was nice to meet you, too.”

It didn’t feel like a simple handshake as he wrapped his fingers around hers. “I had fun tonight. You turned what might have been a horrible night into something surprisingly nice.”
“I’m glad.”

“Thank you for catching me and saving my top and for dinner and talking and…” And maybe she could stop talking.
“You’re welcome.”

A frog gave a low croak, and another answered, but she figured the pounding of her heart was louder.

The buzzing in her head grew louder, and she felt dizzy from looking into his eyes and staring at his lips because she wanted him to kiss her. She wanted to feel those smooth, firm lips on hers, to taste him and feel his arms around her.I'm losing my mind.

“You’re beautiful,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to say that all night.” He lifted his hand and lightly brushed his thumb over her cheek.

Then he leaned in, and she moved. Just…moved. In and up, her fingers twisting in the front of his shirt. She was just falling into the taste of him, just getting that warm, tingling flood of a first kiss when her brain fully registered that he’d been leaning in to kiss her cheek

“I’m sorry.” She swallowed hard, felt a stinging heat flooding into her cheeks, and wished desperately to disappear. Deacon was staring at her in complete confusion. That made two of them. “I’m… really sorry.”

She spun to her door. A stiff wind sang through the open-air hallway, slapping her hair across her eyes. How she got her key in the lock, she had no idea. Mumbling one more apology over her shoulder, she opened the door and closed it behind her. She stood, heart pounding in mortification, her lips buzzing.

The champagne glasses and fruit and cheese tray had been cleared. The bed had been turned back, and the damn swans were back, nestled in the center of the bed and kissing right on their terrycloth lips.
