In The Hang-Up (First Impressions #2) by Tawna Fenske, as a PR specialist first impressions are definitely important when dealing with clients. But when Miriam Ashley comes face-to-face with Jason Sanders again after their awkward first encounter, she sees just how wrong she was about him. Not only is he the epitome of perfection, he also just so happens to be the new CEO of the company she's been hired by. She knows getting involved with him is wrong, especially since he's a total adrenaline junkie in his spare time as well as someone she has to work beside. Yet, the chemistry blazing between them is too hard to deny.
Jason Sanders will do anything for family, so giving up his dreams to be there for his sister and nephew is easy. Especially since he's determined to be the best CEO for Urban Trax -- the company that's hired him to turn things around for them. However, he needs help if he's going to beat the corporate bigwigs at their own game. Yet, the more time he spends with Miriam while she teaches him the in and outs of how to be successful in the boardroom, the more he finds himself falling under her spell.
What an amusing, fast-paced, engaging read Ms. Fenske has penned, encompassing a heroine that is scared to get involved with the hero because she believes he's a total adrenaline junkie that spends his free time looking for his next big thrill, and a hero determined to prove he has what it takes to be a good CEO. Right from the beginning, this story had me laughing, as Miriam makes a really wrong assumption about Jason due to his appearance and from that moment, the story just keeps getting better and better.
The dialogue was well-written, and had a wonderful mix of playful banter and intense narration due to the main characters back stories, how Jason is going to prove he has what it takes to turn the company's problems around, the dilemma Jason faces with his nephew, and whether Miriam can overcome her fear of getting involved with a man that loves to risk his life in his free time. Moreover, there were some really good light-hearted moments between the hero and heroine that had me cheering for this couple. Would they overcome their fears to achieve their happy ever after? The answer to that question is what had me flipping the pages quickly, determined to learn the truth, especially after Miriam makes another wrong assumption that causes her to distrust Jason.
I really liked both the main characters as well as the secondary ones. I could understand why Jason wanted to be there for his sister and nephew after all that they've been through. He and his sister are close, and it wasn't fair what the little boy was going through. He was so adorable, and although Miriam doesn't have a clue when it comes to children, I liked the bond that grew between them. The little boy treats her like family, and that sort of bond is what she needs after she lost the family member she was closest to. Also, I really liked Jason's sister, because she helped Jason see that he could have it all. That he had more room in his life than just for her and his nephew. But what I liked most was when his sister told him what sort of online business she was determined to run. What a laugh and a half!
Miriam is strong, brave and I liked that Jason managed to convince her to step out of her comfort zone, so she could get a bit more familiar with Urban Trax and its products. Since she's a city girl through and through, and after suffering the lose of someone that liked to risk their life, I was intrigued to read whether she'd be able to handle the adventures Jason took her on. Whether she'd be able to handle getting involved with him when what he does in his free time would remind her of her loss. While Jason, he's doing what he thinks is right for the only family members he has left, because his sister and nephew need him more than ever. It was really admirable how dedicated he was to the pair. Also, I liked that he fought for the employees of Urban Trax. That he stood up to the executives of the company to fight for what he believed was right, and ended up beating the corporate jerks at their own game.
Overall, this was a really good book that encompassed several hot sex scenes that did justice to this couple's intense chemistry, entertaining dialogue that left a smile on my face, and a plot that left me constantly contemplating what would happen next until I couldn't believe how quickly I was at the final page. The way this story ended with the epilogue made me grin. I liked how Jason's nephew and the way they celebrated his return to good health linked back to the moment the hero and heroine first met and how Jason likes to get dirty for a good cause. I would recommend The Hang-Up by Tawna Fenske, if you enjoy heroes that would do anything for family, or independent heroines taken way out of their comfort zones such as a city girl on a great outdoors adventure.

OVERALL RATING:

BLURB:
PR specialist Miriam Ashley makes her living cleaning up bad boys. Mountain climber-turned-CEO Jason Sanders should be an easy fix. And with a nephew to care for, he’s motivated. The problem? Every time she tries to help Jason get his head in the boardroom, they end up in the bedroom.

What the hell is she thinking? He’s the definition of off-limits. Not just because he’s a client—he spends his free time risking his life mountain climbing. The same thing that got her father killed. She’s not going to open her heart to a guy who could disappear at the drop of a…well, she’d rather not finish that thought.

She needs to leave complicated alone, but every time she sees Jason, something tells her it’s her who might fall…

“At least I have the good sense to keep my mouth shut in board meetings instead of peppering all my dialogue with profanity,” Miriam said.

“Keeping my mouth shut isn’t usually an option as CEO,” Jason pointed out. “I don’t suppose you’d care to give me some pointers on being a more polished professional?”

“What, you mean like etiquette lessons?”

“Sure, something like that.”

Miriam snorted. “We’ve known each other forty-eight hours, so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt for not realizing I’m the last person in the world who should be giving anyone etiquette lessons.”

“I beg to differ,” he said, his gaze sweeping her body in a way that made her shiver. “You’re the most put-together woman I’ve ever met.”

“Looks can be deceiving.”

“And you totally owned it in the board meeting.”

“Owning a team of suit-clad, tie-yanking executives is only slightly more challenging than owning a housecat.”

“I’ve met your cat. Considering he sexually assaulted me, that qualifies as a challenging pet.”
