REVIEW: LIFE OF LIES by SHARON SALA

Life of Lies
By Sharon Sala
Releasing October 1st, 2017
Harlequin MIRA

In Life of Lies by Sharon Sala, Sahara Travis finds herself the target of someone willing to do whatever it takes to kill her. Even worse, multiple attempts on her life force her into hiring a security specialist to protect her. However, Brendan McQueen is not what Sahara was expecting, and instead, she finds herself captivated by the man. Will her burly bodyguard be able to keep her safe, or will they lose their shot at happy ever after?

What a thrilling and very engaging read Ms. Sala has penned in this story where the person responsible for the terrible things that happen to Sahara makes this book intense and fills it with edge-of-your-seat suspense. The way this story started drew me in immediately and had me determined to discover why someone would target Sahara. Why is the person responsible going to such dangerous lengths to see her dead? Will Brendan be able to find the person responsible before the danger gets too close? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine met that I found myself totally captivated by this story, as Sahara was reluctant to have a bodyguard and Brendan is a stickler for setting rules and making absolutely certain his charge follows them. Will Sahara do what she's told from the get-go?

As for the dialogue, it had me hooked because of how intense it was due to the lengths the person targeting Sahara was willing to go to. There are so many incidents that had me wondering when something would finally happen to Sahara that Brendan might not be capable of protecting her from. Moreover, the heroine is strong and brave in being able to handle everything she goes through. I also liked how she handled the hero's bossiness when it came to her safety. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine is the challenge she provides the hero. While the hero, his listen-to-me-or-else attitude was endearing and showed that he would do anything for someone he was protecting, which is proven by what he's done for previous clients that he's protected and what he does for the heroine. I also liked that he gave the heroine a chance, even though being with her could make it more dangerous to protect her.

Overall, Ms. Sala has penned another really good romantic suspense where the chemistry between this couple was intense and had me wanting to know how long it would take the hero to give into their chemistry; the romance was delightful and showed how good these two are together; and the ending had me on the edge-of-my-seat because of what the heroine goes through and how far the hero is willing to go to protect her. Moreover, I also was surprised by the ending because of how many people were responsible for trying to end Sahara's life. I would recommend Life of Lies by Sharon Sala, if you enjoy romantic suspense, the sexy protector trope, or books by authors Carla Neggers, Heather Graham, Linda Howard and Karen Rose.

Fame, fortune...and a fatal obsession

Sahara Travis is used to being worshipped by adoring fans, but now someone is fixated on her in a dangerous way. After multiple attempts on her life, she reluctantly agrees to hire a security specialist for her protection, though the last thing she wants is some burly bodyguard invading her personal space.

Former army ranger Brendan McQueen's job is to keep the starlet safe and track down her would-be assassin. But when Sahara receives news that her estranged mother has been murdered and her father, the top suspect, is missing, Brendan quickly realizes this is much more serious than your average celebrity stalker.

With Brendan and her devoted assistant, Lucy, in tow, Sahara returns to her family estate in New Orleans to uncover the identity of her attempted killer before he can close in on his final target.

REVIEW: HOLIDAY IN THE HAMPTONS by SARAH MORGAN

Holiday in the Hamptons
From Manhattan with Love #5
By Sarah Morgan
Releasing August 29th, 2017
Harlequin MIRA

In Holiday in the Hamptons (From Manhattan with Love #5) by Sarah Morgan, Felicity 'Fliss' Knight never thought she'd come face-to-face with her ex-husband again, but when he starts working at her local vet clinic, Felicity is determined to avoid crossing paths with him. So, when an opportunity presents itself for Felicity to get out of town, she takes it. Yet, when Fliss's plan comes unstuck and she finds herself face-to-face with Seth Carlyle for the first time in ten years, she doesn't know what to do, except stay away from him. However, Seth doesn't make things easy and Fliss finds herself falling for him all over again. Will they get their second chance at happy ever after or will their past demons keep Fliss from taking a chance?

Ms. Morgan is a new-to-me author and I've got to say that I really enjoyed this book because of the hero and his determination to win the heroine back; the intense dialogue that made me sympathize with the main characters because of what happened that tore them apart; the entertaining secondary characters that had me laughing with their teasing banter because they want Fliss to be happy; and the tough obstacles that had me wondering if this pair would be able to overcome them. The way this story started with the prologue had me hooked, as it reveals how difficult Fliss's life was with her father and how her relationship with Seth made it better. However, it was from the moment where the hero and heroine met for the first time in the present that made this story fast-paced for me, as I wanted to know whether Seth would be able to win the heroine over, especially since she's lying to him to protect herself. Will Seth discover the truth or does he already know?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine, as her upbringing was so different to his. Where the hero had a loving family, Fliss did everything she could to keep herself safe from the one person that should have done everything to protect her. Moreover, the heroine is strong and brave, yet I found her a tad frustrating when it came to her denying her and Seth's second chance at happy ever after. Just because she had a horrible upbringing and that things didn't work out with the hero the first time around, it didn't mean that the second time couldn't be different. Didn't Fliss realize she could trust Seth? Yet, in saying that, I liked the moment where she began to give the hero a chance, because she did still have feelings for Seth. I also liked how Fliss did everything she could to prove her father wrong by building a successful business that she's determined to make even successful.

While Seth, he's done well for himself, yet I couldn't help but sympathize with him when it came to his sister meddling in his love life and trying to push him into something he didn't want. I also liked how kind and caring he is towards his patients and that he would do anything for the animals he treats. Yet, what I liked most of all about the hero was his determination to win the heroine back and that he didn't push her to open up to him about the past until she was absolutely ready. I also liked that the hero had the secondary characters on his side and that they all sang his praises to Fliss, because he's the most open and honest person that does right by those he loves and cares about.

Overall, Ms. Morgan has penned a really good read in this story where the chemistry between this couple was as strong now as it was in the past, where the romance showed how good these two are together, and the ending had me smiling because Fliss and her twin sister would do anything for each other, which is proven by what her her sister does for Fliss because she doesn't want the heroine to miss out on her second chance at love. Yet, what I liked most about the way this story ended is what Seth was willing to do to be with Fliss and vice versa. Will they stay in the Hamptons or go back to New York? Will Seth give up everything he's worked so hard for, or will Fliss make the sacrifice and do her best to expand her and her sister's dog walking business in a new location? I would recommend Holiday in the Hamptons by Sarah Morgan, if you enjoy second chance romances or books by authors Roxanne St. Claire, Jill Shalvis, Susan Mallery and Julie James.

REVIEW: THE COLDEST FEAR by DEBRA WEBB

The Coldest Fear
Shades of Death #3
By Debra Webb
Releasing August 29th, 2017
Harlequin MIRA

In The Coldest Fear (Shades of Death #3) by Debra Webb, Nick Shade is the one man that's managed to help Bobbie past her grief after the death of her husband and son. So, with Nick determined to go on the hunt for his serial-killer father; a dangerous man that has escaped from prison, Bobbie decides she won't be far behind. However, when she's dragged into an investigation as a distraction, Bobbie needs to unravel what is going on before things become too dangerous for her and Nick. Will Bobbie be able to uncover the truth in order to survive?

This series has been a wild ride when it comes to the suspense; everything the main characters have been through as they've outwitted killers and been pushed to the brink when it comes to the loses they've suffered; and this third book of Ms. Webb's Shades of Death series was scintillating, fast-paced and a story I could not put down. The way this story started had me liking the heroine and her determination to help Nick with finding his dad, even though she knows he wouldn't accept her help because he's protective of her. Will she be able to convince him otherwise? Especially since she's overcome a lot all ready and has proven she can handle herself in a tough situation against the most dangerous of criminals.

As for the dialogue, it was powerful, intense and took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, as the investigation Bobbie's been invited into takes plenty of twists and turns that could lead to Nick's world being turned upside down and could make Bobbie think back on all she's lost, especially her son. Furthermore, the heroine is resilient, courageous and I liked how determined she was to aid both the police department she's helping and how determined she was to help Nick, because the two of them working together is better than them each working alone. I also liked how cool Bobbie was under pressure, especially when it came to standing up for herself when it came to her relationship with Nick. While Nick, he's resourceful, determined and I liked how protective he was of Bobbie and that he would do anything for her. Then again, there's no talking Bobbie out of doing her job, no matter how dangerous things could become. I also liked how this story unwound when it came to the hero's back story and how it's different to what he's believed over the years.

Overall, Ms. Webb has penned a scintillating and worthwhile read in this book where the chemistry between Nick and Bobbie was as strong as ever and the ending had me on the edge-of-my-seat due to what one of the main characters goes through and took me by surprise by what readers learn about Nick. I would recommend The Coldest Fear by Debra Webb, if you enjoy romantic suspense, mystery novels, or books by authors Cynthia Eden, Sharon Sala, Lisa Jackson and Mary Burton.

REVIEW: LOCKED IN TEMPTATION by BRENDA JACKSON

Locked in Temptation
The Protectors #3
By Brenda Jackson
Releasing August 1st, 2017
Harlequin MIRA

In Locked in Temptation (The Protectors #3) by Brenda Jackson, having been hurt by love in the past, Joy Ingram has put all her time into being a brilliant police detective. However, she's never had such an undeniable connection to a man before, and so she finds it hard to stay away from Stonewall Courson. Yet, her job has always come first and that's not going to change, especially when she's tasked with investigating the murder of a woman that she discovers was part of an underground surrogate baby-making ring. Will Joy find the people responsible, or will the threat she poses to bringing down the ringmasters put her in danger she may not be able to get out of?

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Jackson and the first I've read in this series, but once I finished it, I have plans to read the previous books of this series, as the secondary characters were just as intriguing as the main ones and the dialogue was intense and gave me -- as a reader -- a good dose of knowledge in what the secondary characters have had to overcome to be together. The way this story started had me enjoying both the main characters, especially the hero, as he has plans that consist of getting the long-awaited date he wants with the heroine. Will their night go uninterrupted? Will the heroine agree to the heroine's plan or will he have to use whatever means necessary to get a date with Joy?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and Joy's investigation into the murder of a woman that was part of an underground surrogate baby-making ring. Will she find the answers she's looking for? What danger will she face the more invested she becomes in her investigation? Moreover, the dialogue wasn't only told from the points-off-view of the hero and heroine, but also some of the secondary characters.

Both the main characters were fantastic and I loved every moment they conversed, because this couple bring out the best in each other. Furthermore, Joy is smart, tenacious and I liked that she took a chance on Stonewall, even though her last relationship has left her wary of ever giving happy ever after a chance. While Stonewall, I loved the ways he convinced Joy to give him a chance, most especially what he did at the beginning to get her to finally go on a first date with him. He's confident and I liked how protective he was of the heroine, even though she's tough enough to fight her own battles when it comes to arrogant men that believe she shouldn't have gotten the promotion she did and going up against the people running the surrogate baby-making ring. I also liked the tight friendships he shared with the secondary characters and how they teased him when it came to his relationship with Joy. It's palpable they want Stonewall to find the kind of happiness they've all found and it's obvious that Joy makes him happy. Yet, what I liked most of all about the hero is how he's managed to overcome his past and that Joy was willing to take a chance on him, even though he's been on the other side of the law.

Overall, Ms. Jackson has penned a thrilling read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was explosive; the romance full of exquisite heat and passion that did justice to this couple's intense chemistry; and the ending had me on the edge-of-my-seat with what Joy faces to get justice for the victims of the baby-making ring. However, it was how things turned out between Stonewall and Joy that I really loved, because after what they go through at the end, there's no way that either can deny how they truly feel for each other anymore. I would recommend Locked in Temptation by Brenda Jackson, if you enjoy romantic suspense, the friends to lovers trope or books by authors Maisey Yates, Maya Banks, Katie Reus and Susan Stoker.

REVIEW: UNTIL YOU LOVED ME by BRENDA NOVAK

Until You Loved Me
Silver Springs #3
By Brenda Novak
Releasing July 25th, 2017
Harlequin MIRA

In Until You Loved Me (Silver Springs #3) by Brenda Novak, discovering her fiancé with another man has Ellie slipping her usual straight-laced self and embracing her wild side by having a one-night stand. However, when she soon after that night discovers she's pregnant, she never imagined not knowing the guy's full name would be a bad thing. Yet, when Ellie learns the truth, will she be able to give Hudson King a chance, or will his fame as a professional football player stop her from ever giving him a chance?

This series just keeps getting better and better with every book, and this story is the best so far due to the main characters back stories that leave them wary of love; the intense dialogue that had me sympathizing with the hero and heroine because of all that they've been through in the past; and the tough obstacles these two have to overcome to achieve their happy ever after including someone that is determined to manipulate the hero for their own gain. The way this story started had me really liking the heroine because she's brave in being able to put herself back out there again, even if she's only looking for a one-night stand.

As for the dialogue, it was very entertaining due to what's happening with the hero when it comes to his past; the pressure the heroine is facing from her ex when it comes to his new relationship and whether they can move past what happened between them; and the challenges these two face such as Hudson's accusations and whether they can find a way to deal with the fact that they're going to be parents. Will Hudson be able to convince Ellie that they can make things work between them? Will Ellie be able to help Hudson overcome his past and show him how good loving someone can be?

Both the hero and heroine were fantastic and well-developed characters, and I loved every moment they conversed to win each other's trust and overcome their pasts to find their happy ever after. Both aren't looking for a relationship, especially since loving someone can lead to hurt and I could understand their reasons because Hudson has never known love and Ellie was betrayed by someone she loved. Yet, Ellie is strong and brave by giving Hudson a chance and I liked how determined she was to help Hudson when it came to his past. I also liked how her need to find answers as a scientist comes into play when it comes to discovering things about Hudson's past, which is proven by her determination to learn the truth. Will the people trying to manipulate or take advantage of the hero because he's a popular football player with lots of money win?

While the hero, he's been through so much in his life and I sympathized with him. However, he's been lucky to have the people he does in his life in the secondary characters. I also liked how kind and caring he is, and all that he has accomplished as a professional football player both on and off the field. The people he helps as a mentor to some of the secondary characters, especially Aaron, just had me loving Hudson more than I already did. The friendship he has with Aaron and the way the young man can tease Hudson about the way he plays football had me smiling.

Overall, Ms. Novak has penned another wonderful read in this book where the chemistry was strong between this couple, the romance nicely-detailed, and the story tugged at my heart-strings when it came to the hero's point-of-view and how he's overcome his past to be the man he is. The way this story ended had me so happy for this couple, as they are so deserving of their happy ever after. The heroine is so determined to prove to Hudson that she's not going anywhere. That she's there for him through thick and thin. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up perfectly, as we discover how everything turned out with the people determined to try and hurt Hudson because of his past; and readers discover how parenthood suits Hudson. He is going to be a great dad. I would recommend Until You Loved Me by Brenda Novak, if you enjoy the second chance romance trope, the opposites attract trope or books by authors Marie Force, Susan Mallery, Barbara Freethy and Jill Shalvis.

BLURB
Sometimes starting over means finding everything youve been missing…

After catching her fiancé cheating — with another man — usually straitlaced, workaholic scientist Ellie Fisher liberates her wild side just long enough to indulge in a passionate one-night stand with a tall, dark stranger she meets at a trendy Miami bar. Being a professional football player, Hudson King has always been cautious around women. But this one had been different — so disinterested in his celebrity, so convincingly into him. When Ellie tracks him down, claiming shes carrying his baby, hes stunned. And more than a little betrayed.

REVIEW: RACE AGAINST TIME by SHARON SALA

Race Against Time
By: Sharon Sala
Releasing June 27th, 2017
Harlequin MIRA

In Race Against Time by Sharon Sala, Quinn O'Meara finds it hard to trust people after experiencing tough times while growing up in the foster system. However, the moment she comes upon a fiery car crash, and finds a crying baby, she's determined to get the baby to safety. Except she never imagined she'd find herself hunted by a bad man involved in human trafficking. Luckily, her long-lost friend, Detective Nick Saldano, is determined to protect her at all costs. Will Nick be able to win Quinn over, so they can have a second chance at happy ever after?

What a wild ride Ms. Sala takes readers on this story, which encompasses several characters points-of-view in both the good guys and the bad guys, the second chance romance trope, plot twists that will leave readers determined to discover what else happens and a prologue that will have readers hooked from the very beginning. The way this story started had me feeling sorry for the victims of the human trafficking ring, as the treatment was rough and horrible. How can people be so cruel?

As for the dialogue, it was powerful, emotional and takes readers on a thrilling journey into the devastation human trafficking rings create for loved ones of kidnapped victims, the hope that a family will be reunited with said loved ones, how far the bad guys are willing to go to escape capture and what the cops are willing to do to protect witnesses and take down the bad guys. Moreover, the dialogue was also intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine. She had it rough growing up, and I could understand why she finds it hard to trust people. Although, Nick is completely different, because of the tight bond they shared years ago. I also liked how strong and brave she was, as it shows she's a fighter who has managed to survive all she's suffered during her time in the foster system.

While Nick, I loved him. He's strong, smart, protective and I liked how determined he was to win the heroine over to make her realize that she doesn't have to keep running from her past. I also liked the tight bond he shared with his relatives, as it showed he had a good life; a life filled with love and laughter after he and the heroine were separated when they were younger. Luckily, there's a lot of love to go around and that Nick's family was so accepting of Quinn.

Overall, Ms. Sala has penned a really good read in this romantic suspense where the chemistry was strong and palpable and revealed how right these two are for each other. The way this story ended had me on the edge-of-my-seat due to the danger the main characters face. Will they get the head bad guy that is determined to rob Quinn of her life? Will Nick be able to protect Quinn? Moreover, I liked how Quinn handles herself, as it proves she's determined to see justice served. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped everything up nicely, as we discover how far Nick and Quinn have come in their relationship and what happened to the bad guy. I would recommend Race Against Time by Sharon Sala, if you enjoy romantic suspense, second chance romances, the sexy protector trope or books by authors Alison Brennan, Karen Rose, Melinda Leigh or Pamela Clare.

REVIEW: NO ONE BUT YOU by BRENDA NOVAK

No One But You
Silver Springs #2
By: Brenda Novak
Releasing May 30th, 2017
Harlequin MIRA

In No One But You (Silver Springs #2) by Brenda Novak, Sadie Harris is determined to move on with her life and make her soon-to-be ex, Sly, realize once and for all that she'll never go back to him. Except to do that, she needs a job and so she accepts the one offered to her by Dawson Reed; a man that's only just been acquitted for the murder of his adoptive parents. Will she be safer with Dawson on her side, or will his presence in her life get him hurt?

What a wonderful and gripping tale Ms. Novak has penned in this second story of her Silver Springs series, which grabbed my attention from the very beginning and didn't let go until I was at the end quicker than I expected. The way this story started had me concerned for the heroine, because she could have been putting her life at risk by meeting Dawson. Since everyone in their small town believed he was guilty of the crime he'd been charged with and no one seems to think any different, even though he was acquitted of the crime. Will Sadie be able to help him prove everyone wrong? Will the person that committed the heinous crime be brought to justice?

As for the dialogue, it was compelling due to the main characters back stories and together with the challenges these two face made this story a real page turner. Sadie's soon-to-be ex-husband is causing trouble for her and doesn't know when to give up. Will she ever finally be free of him? Certainly, Sadie gives him enough reason to finally give up on her by the way she stands up to him and begins to fight back with her words. I found her strength and courage admirable, because no woman should be afraid of the man they once loved. I also liked the heroine's determination to stand up for Dawson, because he was a good man that didn't deserve to have everyone against him when it was palpable how much he loved his adoptive family, which is proven by all he's doing to get his sister back.

While Dawson, he's been through so much and I could understand why he feels the way he does about law enforcement. No way could he trust any police after what they did to him. Also, I liked that he was willing to let Sadie and her son into his life, and how protective he was of them. Her soon-to-be ex-husband was a real piece of work, and I was glad that he didn't allow the man to intimidate him. That he was willing to help Sadie fight back and stuck by her through thick and thin, no matter how dangerous things became for him.

Overall, this was a really good read that kept me entertained from start to finish with its dialogue and wonderful array of characters, except the majority of the police force because it's palpable the boys in blue stick together. Why couldn't they realize how much of a danger Sadie's soon-to-be ex posed to her life after every wrong move he made towards her? The way this story ended had me concerned for the main characters. How far was Sly willing to go to make sure the main characters paid because of all he believes they've done to him? However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up perfectly, because of what the townspeople did for Dawson. Certainly, he deserves the acceptance of the townspeople after what they learn about the person responsible for committing the crime he was acquitted for. I would recommend No One But You by Brenda Novak, if you enjoy the second chance romance trope, the sexy protector trope or books by authors Lori Wilde, Bella Andre or Marie Force.
