SPOTLIGHT & GIVEAWAY: COWBOYS NEED NOT APPLY by ROBERT TATE MILLER

About the Book:

No, prima donna ballerina Jessica Carmichael isn’t interested in the rough-and-tumble rodeo cowboy she met in physical therapy. In fact, she’s actively uninterested in his cocky smile, and his go-with-the-flow attitude, and how his silly little bets make her work harder than ever to fix her knee. She’d like nothing more than to strangle him, if she wasn’t so busy thinking about kissing him.

Matt Walker's best hope of getting back in the saddle is charming Jessica into teaching him ballet. He needs to get back on the bronc…even if he has to get there in tights. Only the uptight ballerina lives in a completely different world, one he wouldn't touch with a ten-foot mechanical bull. But maybe the one thing she needs more than control is to lose control for once—with him.

It was nearly midnight when Jessica and Matt strolled down 5th Avenue and long past closing hours for the famously pricey stores. Anne Taylor, Abercrombie and Fitch and Anthropologie were all shuttered for the night. Jessica had her arm looped through Matt’s as if he were escorting her safely home after the prom. She was in no hurry to flag a cab. She smiled in the silence and thought about the wedding and her toast and the dancing. She hadn’t had that much fun in a long time, maybe ever. Then her thoughts sobered. Training was over. Matt had no more excuses to stay in the city. He’d be going home, and she’d be back to her routine, back to her studio, and her life, and the pain of her career’s early demise. She’d have no more cowboy distractions to occupy her mind. She was happy when Matt broke the silence.

“So, what now?” he said.

“You go back to Montana, I guess,” Jessica said. I’m sure Harry misses you.”

Matt looked at her. “You think I’ll be ready for The Big Ride?”

“I’m not a doctor,” Jessica said. “But if you stick with the routine, I think you’ve got a gambler’s chance. How does it feel?”

“Feels good,” Matt said.

“Good. I don’t want you to be over confident. But, I think you should be proud of yourself. You done good, cowboy. How long do you have to decide?” Jessica said. “To do the Big Ride?”

“Right up to the last. I’m already entered. I can scratch the night of the rodeo if need be.”

“Okay, fine. Then you should just see how you feel. And only do it if you’re a hundred percent sure…” Matt suddenly stopped walking, pulled Jessica to him and kissed her. She was stunned as his lips pushed against hers, his strong hands on her elbows lifting her until she was on her tippy toes. She kissed back, moving her tongue in between his lips, closing her eyes and loving the feel of his scratchy beard against her pale cheeks. She felt her nipples harden, her heartbeat kick into overdrive. She put a hand on his chest and gently pushed back, though without much enthusiasm.

“Wait,” she said. She caught her breath, felt her swollen lips. “Don’t…”

“Don’t?” Matt said.

“Don’t kiss me like that. You’re leaving. You’re going back to Wyoming.”

“Montana,” Matt corrected, and Jessica felt foolish: foolish and giddy and out of sorts. Had one kiss done that to her? she mused.

BLURB
Sometimes love is better the second time around . . .

Mia Gibbs spent her marriage putting her husband's needs before her own. And now, after a painful divorce, she's building a new life for herself and her two daughters back home at Firefly Lake. The last thing she needs is a man to complicate things. But former bad boy turned friend Nick McGuire-and the one kiss they've shared-has turned everything upside down . . .

Attorney Nick McGuire wasn't meant to be a family man. His career has always been his focus and after taking time out to help his mother, he's ready to get back to the city . . . until Mia and her daughters arrive at Firefly Lake. Mia is beautiful and intriguing, and it doesn't take long to realize being "just friends" will never be enough. As the summer nights turn colder, Nick will have to choose between the life he's always wanted . . . and the woman he can't live without.

Top 3 favorite scenes and excerpts
By Jen Gilroy

In SUMMER ON FIREFLY LAKE, the second book in my Firefly Lake series, two people who aren’t looking for love discover the life they need might not be the one they thought they wanted.

This story is packed with emotions, second chances, family drama, and the complications that come with starting over when you’re dragging a whole lot of baggage behind you.

A small lakeside town, not one but two romances, and a dash of summer magic—I fell in love with Mia, Nick, and the world of Firefly Lake when writing this story and hope you do, too.

And if you enjoyed the first book in the series, THE COTTAGE AT FIREFLY LAKE, you’ll be happy to know that familiar characters reappear to give you glimpses of their happy ever after.

My top 3 scenes with small excerpts from each

     1. SUMMER ON FIREFLY LAKE is a story of transformation, especially for Mia, the heroine. After a lifetime of trying to please everyone but herself, she’s finally standing on her own two feet as an independent woman, free of her controlling ex-husband.

In this scene, she glimpses the girl she once was, and the woman she could become. As I wrote it, I cheered her on! Tiger tail ice cream, orange-flavored ice cream with stripes of black licorice, is also one of my favorite summer treats.

Her mouth watered as she picked up her spoon. She didn’t have to answer to Jay anymore. She didn’t have to starve herself to stay the size her ex-husband wanted her to be. The size she’d been before she’d had two children. When she’d walked those endless runways to claim the crown for the prettiest girl and the one with the best smile. The one who’d hidden what she thought and felt. The girl all the other girls wanted to be.

“Tiger tail ice cream, huh?” Nick’s blue eyes had a teasing glint that catapulted her back to adolescence. “You always say you don’t remember much about Firefly Lake, but I guess there’s at least one thing you didn’t forget.”

Shadowy memories of the girl and boy she and Nick had once been tugged at the edge of Mia’s consciousness…She remembered all right. Remembered more than the ice cream, and enough to wonder if she’d played it safe too long. And what her life might be like if she loosened a few of those controls.

    2. SUMMER ON FIREFLY LAKE is a small-town romance, and I live in a small town much like those I write about. Although these tight-knit communities can be generous, kind, and welcoming, they’re not places where you can be anonymous. It was fun to create the small-town world of the fictional Firefly Lake, Vermont, including a cast of supporting characters who don’t hesitate to meddle in their neighbors’ business.

In this scene, the hero, Nick, is having breakfast at the local diner when he finds out that a private moment between he and the heroine is anything but.

“You took [Mia] to your gran’s cabin at Fairlight Cove last night, didn’t you?” Liz gave an order for the farmhouse breakfast with eggs over easy to a passing waitress before Nick asked.

“How did you…” Nick stopped. He’d as much as told Liz the truth.

“Your great-aunt Bernice was at the play at that summer theater, and she saw you and Mia there. She left her umbrella under her seat. When she drove back to get it, she passed you turning into Lost Loon Lake Road. There’s nothing along that road but your gran’s cabin and the hunting camp that got burnt out two winters ago…First thing this morning, Bernice called me.”

Nick pressed his thumbs against his temples. “Who else did she call?”

“Nobody.” Liz’s eyes took on a steely glint. “I mentioned I knew all the beds her shoes have been under.”

“Great-aunt Bernice?” Nick’s mouth fell open. Bernice was over eighty, favored fussy floral prints and sensible shoes, and had been widowed as long as he could remember.

“You think she’s too old?” Liz poked Nick’s chin with a forefinger and closed his mouth. “We women have needs, and there are lots of lonely and able widowers in this town.”

   3. Not least, SUMMER ON FIREFLY LAKE is also a story about family relationships, especially between parents and children. I particularly enjoyed writing about the hero’s relationship with his mother, Gabrielle, and how Gabrielle, who has been alone for many years and recently battled cancer, found her own happy ending when, like her son, she too least expected it.

Once again set in the diner (and including ice cream!), this scene explores some of those shifting family dynamics.

“You’re a good man, and I’m proud to call you my son.”

For an instant, Nick’s gaze connected with [his mom’s] and something changed. Something important. “I’m proud you’re my mom, too.” He gave an awkward laugh.

Gabrielle tucked her arm through his. “Maybe, I mean if you don’t mind, I could ask Ward to join us. He’s waiting for me across the street.”

“Fine by me.” Nick guided her through the diner to the front counter. “You go get him and I’ll order. Does he like chocolate waffle cones as much as we do?”

“He sure does.” Gabrielle might not know much about Ward, but she knew that.

There was still a lot she wanted to know about him but, for now, she knew what she needed and both of them were taking baby steps.

Her gaze met Nick’s again and held. Like she was taking baby steps with her son.

And now an additional excerpt from the book, sweet with a dash of spice and a hint of sexy times to come!

Mia looked at the night sky, where stars twinkled above the forested hills. When she was little, she’d wished on stars and believed in a happy-ever-after. But she was an adult, and life had made her wiser and destroyed her childish belief in magic and wishes. “Where do we go from here?”

“I’ll take you back to Mom’s if you want me to.” Nick’s arm brushed the curve of [Mia’s] shoulder through her light sweater, and the tremble inside her kicked up. “If you’re not ready.”
She was ready all right and had been even before he kissed her the first time. “I want this.” Mia lifted her face to his as a cloud scudded across the moon. “I want you.”
Even if it could only be for tonight, she was Mia, not a mom, not a sister, and not a wife who’d been tossed aside for someone younger and curvier. For this one moment, she didn’t have any responsibilities except what she wanted and needed.
I want you, too.” Nick took her hand and led her toward the car. “A part of me has wanted you since I was fifteen and you hung out at the town beach in that green bikini with the white flowers.”
Her heart lurched. He’d noticed her enough to remember the bikini she’d hidden from her mom. The one she’d bought because she’d heard Nick say he liked green. “You were always with the guys by the life guard station.”
His fit body was encased in a pair of board shorts, and his eyes were hidden behind mirrored sunglasses. Everything about him was a lot sexy and a little bit dangerous.
“I wanted to see you.” His smile was forced, like the admission cost him more than he wanted her to know.
Mia curved her cold hand into his warm one. She’d guessed she’d hurt him the one time they’d gone out, but until tonight she hadn’t understood how much. She couldn’t regret the past, and she couldn’t predict the future, but she could do something about the present. “I want to be with you. Even though we’re not teenagers anymore and I don’t have that green bikini.
Nick’s gaze skimmed her body from head to toe and lingered at her breasts. Then he gave her a grin that was pure bad boy. “I was always a lot more interested in what was underneath that bikini anyway.”
He opened the passenger door for her to slide in.
She looked at him from under her lashes and flirted like she’d wanted to do all those years ago but had been too shy. “You were, were you?”
“Oh yeah.” He shut the car door and, in the sudden silence, panic rolled over her again. Except, there was excitement too. She was going to do what she’d hardly let herself think about…”

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: RUN TO GROUND by KATIE RUGGLE

Run to Ground
Rocky Mountain K9 Unit #1
By: Katie Ruggle
Releasing June 6th, 2017
Sourcebooks Casablanca

In Run to Ground (Rocky Mountain K9 Unit #1) by Katie Ruggle, ever since losing his K9 partner and the man that taught him everything, Theo Bosco has been struggling to keep his anger in check. Still, he soldiers on and does his best to bond with his new K9 partner, but something is missing from his life until he meets waitress Julie 'Jules' Jackson. However, when a ruthless killer targets the woman he's coming to care for, will Theo be able to protect her, so they have a chance at happy ever after?

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Ruggle and I've got to say that it won't be my last. Right from the beginning, this story was extremely engaging and how it begins drew me in immediately, because the hero is intrigued by the heroine and is determined to learn what her story is. Will the heroine cave to his demand for information? However, what I liked most about the start of this story was the heroine's reaction to the hero. Is she afraid of the hero himself, or is it the fact that he's a cop?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the danger these two face as well as the main characters back stories, and I liked how these two help each other a tad to heal from the hurts of their pasts. However, I was a little disappointed about the fact that the heroine didn't offer up any more about her past and why she's on the run with her siblings than she did. Since I really wanted to know more about what was so bad about their home life than what I discovered while reading this book.

Compelling characters in both the main and secondary characters make this story a worthwhile read and I loved the bond the heroine shares with her siblings. They've been through so much and I could understand why Jules was willing to do whatever it takes -- even if it meant breaking the law -- to make certain her family were safe. The heroine is also strong and brave for doing what she does for her siblings and I liked how determined she was to succeed in protecting her family. While the hero, he needs Jules in a way he never realized until she came into his life. She offers him peace for the first time since he lost his two partners in his mentor and his dog. I also liked how kind and caring he is towards the heroine's siblings, and how they help Theo to bond with his new K9 partner, because the dog responds so well to the children.

Overall, Ms. Ruggle has penned an entertaining romantic suspense in this book, which takes readers on a wild ride mixing suspense and romance into a story that captured my attention from start to finish, as the hero does his best to protect Jules when it seems she may be a target of a threat that Theo never could have imagined. The way this story ended had me on the edge-of-my-seat due to the danger the hero and heroine face. Will they come out on top? Will Theo be able to stop the threat before anyone is too seriously hurt? Moreover, I loved the secondary characters towards the end, especially Theo's friends. They were suspicious of Jules and didn't trust her, but I liked how she won them over. I would recommend Run to Ground by Katie Ruggle, if you enjoy romantic suspense or books by authors Piper J. Drake, Katie Reus, Susan Stoker or Cynthia Eden.

He lost his K9 partner.
He almost lost his will to live.

Grieving the death of his partner, Theo Bosco has no room in his life for distractions. Though his instincts scream that he should avoid Juliet ‘Jules’ Jackson, he can’t seem to stay away. It doesn’t help that Theo’s new K9 companion has fallen head over paws with Jules’s rambunctious family.

Or that when he’s with her, Theo finally knows peace.

When Jules rescued her siblings, whisking them away to the safety of the beautifully rugged Colorado Rockies, she never expected to catch the eye—or the heart—of a cop. Yet as Jules struggles to fight her growing attraction to the brooding K9 officer, another threat lurks much closer to home…

And this time, there’s no escape.

Her shoulders lifting and dropping again in a sigh, Jules stiffened her spine. She just needed to be confident. She also needed to not let the cop’s air of authority—as well as his muscled forearms and pretty dark-brown eyes—reduce her to the babbling idiot she’d become the last time he’d been at the diner. For goodness’ sake, she’d messed up her name. Her name. If she wanted to survive in her new life, she needed to step up her game. Firming her jaw, she picked up a coffeepot and headed to Theo’s table.
He watched her, his frown deepening with each step, and she fought the urge to slow or, better yet, turn tail and run.
“Morning.” She turned the mug in front of him right side up with shaky fingers. His wary eyes—almost black and alarmingly perceptive—took in everything, including, she was sure, her obvious unease. “Did you need a menu?”
Jules caught herself before he could respond.
“Sorry.” Her flush prickled her chest and moved up to her face to warm her cheeks. “Of course you don’t need a menu. You probably know everything on there by now. Well, I’m guessing you do. I’ve only seen you here once, but Megan mentioned you’re a regular.”
Abruptly, Jules stopped talking. More of the nervous babble pressed on her lungs, wanting out. Afraid to open her mouth again in case she started talking and wasn’t able to stop until she told this man—this police officer!—everything he shouldn’t know, she forced a smile and stayed quiet. She was turning out to be a terrible felon.
“Number three,” he said after another pause just long enough to make her uncomfortable. “Scrambled.”
“Got it.” Jules scribbled down the order, relieved to have something to focus on other than his too-intense gaze. He looked at her like he could see everything about her, and there were so many things she wanted to keep hidden. When she glanced up, she kept her eyes away from his, focusing on his left earlobe instead. “That’ll be right out.”
After picking up the coffeepot again, she began to turn around, relieved. A sound behind her, something halfway between a masculine grunt and a throat clearing, made her stop reluctantly. Jules focused on his other earlobe this time, trying not to show her renewed panic. “Was there something else you needed?”
“Where are you staying?” He bit off each word, making him sound like he was angry he had to speak to her.
The mild, unfocused fear blossomed into terror. Why was he asking? Was he investigating her? His frown deepened when she took a beat too long to answer, and she rushed out her response. “Um…in Monroe.”
“Where?”
Her paranoia was feeding her panic, and she gave a vague wave toward the north. “On the edge of town.”
If he narrowed his eyes any more, he’d be squinting. “The blue house off of Orchard Street?”
“No.” Her feet moved of their own volition, and she took a step toward the door. This job was too important for her to run out on her second day, but the cop’s questioning was pushing her to the point where she just wanted to escape, paycheck or no paycheck.
“The old Garmitt place, then.” It was a statement instead of a question, and the accuracy of the guess made her eyes widen despite herself. Jules knew fear and guilt must be plastered all over her face. “Heard someone had moved in there.”
“Uh…” Her mind raced as she scrambled to think of the best way to respond, to save this conversation from the quickly approaching crash and burn heading her way. “I’m not sure.” She barely caught herself before closing her eyes in exasperation. That was her clever save?
“Your address is Thirty-Two Blank Hill Lane.” Again, he said what should’ve been a question with such certainty that it came out as a statement of fact. “Did you buy it?”
“No.” Running was beginning to sound better and better. Jules was willing to do pretty much anything to get away from this man, this cop, who knew too much already.
“You rent then?” At her nod, he studied her. She stared back, determined not to say more. Every line in his body was held tightly, from the hard line of his mouth to his forearms to his erect spine. “What brings you to town?” he finally asked.
Her mouth opened, but nothing emerged as her thoughts bounced against each other in a chaotic mess. “This job?” Her voice was pitched too high, and the end of her sentence rose, turning it into a question. Jules resisted the urge to smack herself. Between her twitchy behavior and asinine answers, she knew that, even if he hadn’t been suspicious before, he would know for sure now that something wasn’t right. Her shoulders curled in as she wished for the power of invisibility. Either that or better acting skills—or any acting skills.
“What the hell, Theo?” Megan appeared out of nowhere, grasping Jules’s elbow and tugging. Although she jumped initially, Jules relaxed and allowed herself to be pulled a few steps away from the extremely awkward conversation—or interrogation? “I finally find an employee who can do basic math and doesn’t spit on people’s eggs, and she’s the one you inflict yourself on? Drink your coffee and be all broody, like you normally are. Quietly broody.”
The tiny muscle in Theo’s jaw pulsed with tension. Jules didn’t breathe as she waited for him to react. There was strained silence for several seconds before Theo spoke.
“Which one spits?”
“You missed my point.” Whatever else Megan was going to say was interrupted by the thump of the front entrance as it closed behind some new customers. “Be right with you!” Her gaze never left Theo’s face. In turn, he never looked away or flinched. The non-panicked corner of Jules’s brain was impressed with both of them.
“What’s up?” Another cop came to a stop next to the booth, reaching to gently bump Theo’s shoulder with his fist. Although the newcomer was wearing a congenial smile, there was a coiled tension to him. The way he placed his body almost, but not quite, between them and Theo said a lot. It was protective in a got-your-back kind of way, but it also showed that Theo had the lead, that the new guy wasn’t taking over the situation.
“Theo’s scaring my new waitress.” Megan’s glare shot toward the new arrival. “The one who can do math.”
“And doesn’t spit.” Theo’s deadpan delivery made Jules start, and an unbidden smile curled her mouth. Their gazes met, and the cop’s eyes seemed to soften for the shortest of moments. Even before Jules was certain she saw it, it was gone.
“Are those your only hiring qualifications? Adding, subtracting, and saliva control? T, maybe we need to look for a new place for our breakfast meetings.” There was humor in the cop’s voice, although his gaze was ready and watchful, moving from Theo to Megan to Jules.
Turning toward the kitchen while keeping a firm grip on Jules’s arm, Megan said over her shoulder, “Your food is safe, Hugh.”
