Now the weight of Liam's own secrets has forced him into hiding. In The Hunt (Devil's Isle #3) by Chloe Neill, being apart from Liam Quinn has been hard for Claire Connolly, but she's doing her best to cope with the distance he's put between them since he now has his own secret he needs to keep hidden. But when Liam is accused of murder, Claire will do everything in her power to prove his innocence, no matter how hard it is to work alongside him to do just that. Yet, the more they investigate, the more dangerous things begin to come. Will Claire be able to help Liam prove he's innocent, or will time run out for the pair?

This series just keeps getting better and better, and this third book of Ms. Neill's Devil Isle series is the best yet, and has me looking forward to where this author takes readers next. However, with this book, it takes readers on quite the adventure filled with plenty of suspense and action, as Liam and Claire work to prove his innocence, which isn't easy. Will Liam find out who is setting him up to take the fall for the murder? Will he be able to protect Claire from the danger that seems to be drawing closer and closer?

As for the way this story started, it definitely had me hooked and as the story progresses, it becomes exciting in terms of the danger and what Claire and Liam have to do to keep themselves safe. However, I couldn't help but feel sorry for Claire in the beginning, as she's lost a lot in her life. Yet, at least she's given a purpose with Liam in big trouble. Moreover, Claire and Liam are brilliant characters and I love how Claire helps him to deal with the incredible but dangerous power he has that could cost him everything. I also liked how resilient and courageous Claire is when it comes to confronting Liam and standing up to him when he was being difficult. Since things between them are rocky with Liam not trusting himself to be around Claire because he believes it's too dangerous for her. Will they ever be able to get back to the way things were? Will Liam trust Claire to be able to take care of herself when she's around him if his power gets out of hand?

Overall, Ms. Neill has delivered an exceptional read in this book where the chemistry between Liam and Claire is still as strong as ever; and the ending had me on the edge-of-my-seat and worried for the main characters. Will they come out on top against the bad guys? I would recommend The Hunt by Chloe Neill, if you enjoy Science Fiction and/or Fantasy books or books by authors Darynda Jones, Nalini Singh, Keri Arthur and Devon Monk.

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: COVER FIRE by JESS ANASTASI

By: Jess Anastasi

In Cover Fire (Valiant Knox #3) by Jess Anastasi, Sub-Lieutenant Sebastian Rayne never imagined his life would take a dangerous turn when he was sent to retrieve the dead body of a CI agent behind enemy lines. Instead, he finds himself teaming up with the presumed dead woman and helping her uncover the person behind the order to end her life. Will he and Jenna be able to find the truth before the enemy closes in, so they can have their chance at forever love?

Sci-Fi Romances are not books I read a lot of, but when I read the blurb of this story, there was no way I was going to miss out on reading it and I've got to say that this book was everything I'd hoped for and more. Seriously, this story was absolutely riveting, fast-paced and the way this story started had me enjoying this couple immediately, as Sebastian isn't afraid to help Jenna, no matter how dangerous the situation. Will he be able to help Jenna? Will she accept his help when she's been doing things on her own for a number of years?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and everything these two go through on their journey to happy ever after. Sebastian is determined to protect Jenna, but in doing that he makes himself a target as well and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him because of things the bad guys do to him. Moreover, the hero is resilient and I liked how determined he was to help the heroine by watching her back. No way will he allow her to face things alone. I also liked the tight bond he shares with the rest of his team and how they would do anything to support each other through thick and thin. Can he trust them with Jenna's life?

Both the main characters had me hooked due to everything they go through throughout this story and their playful banter at times. Certainly, Jenna provides quite a challenge for Sebastian, because she's so mysterious and strong-willed due to her job. I also liked how strong, brave and tenacious she was in her pursuit of finding the person responsible for wanting her dead. Will she get the answers she wants? While Sebastian, he has quite an intriguing back story due to the betrayal of someone he thought was a good friend and wouldn't do anything as bad as what the man did. So, it was understandable why he was so determined to help Jenna because he knows how much someone betraying him feels.

Overall, Ms. Anastasi has penned an incredible read in this book where the chemistry was sizzling, the romance explosive and the ending had me cheering for this couple's happy ever after, because what happens had me on the edge-of-my-seat and concerned for the main characters. However, it was the final chapter and the epilogue that wrapped this story up wonderfully, as Jenna would do anything for Sebastian to make things right when it came to his job. I would recommend Cover Fire by Jess Anastasi, if you enjoy Sci-Fi Romance with plenty of suspense, or books by authors Veronica Scott, Anna Hackett or Mina Carter.

“You could stay with me. After all, I know what’s really going on. I can watch your back. There’s probably nowhere safer on the ship.”

Jenna nodded, the movement seeming unsure at first, but then becoming more assertive.

“You’re right, there wouldn’t be anywhere safer. But opening up your home to me makes this a bit more personal than what you probably thought you were signing on for.”
Seb shrugged as the transit returned. “I had no idea what I was signing on for, really. So you could pretty much tell me I need to dress up in a tutu and sing soprano, and I’d believe you.”
“I’ll make a note of that for later in the assignment, maybe when I need some kind of distraction.” She grinned and glanced down. “I’m sure you’ve got the legs for it, too.”
“Hell yeah. Once you see me in a tutu, your life will never be the same.”
Jenna gave a short laugh as they got on the transit along with a few other people. He hit the button for the fourth crew level where his one-bedroom apartment was located. He had no problem camping out on the couch for a few days, since offering Jenna the bed was the gentlemanly thing to do.
Call him crazy, but he liked the idea of having her close by. If she went off to stay at a hotel on the gen-pop level, he’d spend the whole time away from her worrying that she was safe. This way was easier, plus it would give them a chance to get to know each other better and take care of any small wrinkles in their fabricated history.
Yep, his reasons were all entirely platonic and selfless, all for her safety and nothing to do with the way she’d felt up against him when they’d hugged before.
Definitely nothing to do with the weird, tight tingle he got in his chest whenever he looked at her now, seeing a gorgeous, down-to-earth kind of girl, and not a fake-plastic bimbo like he’d first thought.
Seb sighed as they arrived on crew level and his ID cleared the way for them. Maybe if he kept telling himself over and over to ignore those intriguing little things about her, eventually the too-interested part of himself might take notice. She sent him a grateful smile as they headed for his door, and the simple expression stabbed right through the middle of his chest.
Too late for caution, because maybe he was already a lost cause.

REVIEW: THE VEIL by CHLOE NEILL

Devil's Isle #1
Released 4th August, 2015
Publisher: Penguin Berkley

In The Veil, the first book in a new series, for author Chloe Neill, Claire Connolly is struggling to hide the fact that she’s a sensitive – a human capable of wielding magic. Since after the war between humans and paranormals, the supes were to be confined to Devil’s Isle, whilst the humans still enjoyed their freedom on the other side of the Veil. When she willingly helps a young woman escape a couple of wraiths, her secret becomes exposed to bounty hunter, Liam Quinn – a gorgeous yet exasperating man that could very easily have her imprisoned, if he didn’t have his own agenda.

As a fan of this author’s Chicagoland Vampire series, I didn’t think her writing could step it up another notch, but I believe this series is going to be the better of the two. This book was fast-paced, and provided me as a reader, with a great introduction to the characters — both the main and secondary ones. It also provided an exciting journey as the heroine strives to do what’s right for humanity while learning to trust someone outside of her close group of friends.

Claire is a strong heroine and complements Liam nicely, ensuring that – if there was to be any romance between them – it would be fueled by their strong chemistry. Unfortunately, this book lacked the amount of romance I like the books I read to contain, but fingers crossed their chemistry will be explored more as the series progresses.

Both main characters are enchanting from the moment they’re introduced. But Liam becomes even more so, once Claire discovers his true motives for helping her. What I enjoyed so much about Claire was her ability to remain strong with every secret revealed about her father and Liam. Perhaps her trusting Liam was a tad naïve, but as the saying goes – keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Not that Liam was her enemy in the end, but you get the point. His position as a bounty hunter threatened her somewhat normal life, on the side of the Veil she preferred to remain on.

Finally, Ms. Neill has done a wonderful job crafting this novel, and I can’t wait to read more of this series in the future. I would recommend it, to anyone looking to read something new, in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre.

BLURB:
Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil’s Isle.

Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.

Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.

But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or else New Orleans will burn…

REVIEW: WILD RAIN by Charlotte Boyett-Compo

Wild Rain
By: Charlotte Boyett-Compo
Released April 22, 2015
Publisher: Ellora Cave
295 Pages

Rain-Runner Kiel seems to be the only man game enough to take on the job of town sheriff in order to stand against the Brotherhood of the Domination, a sect that think people of an ethnic group other than theirs are beneath them. When the woman he’s always loved returns to town, things become complicated as he not only tries to keep her out of harm’s way but endeavors to take down the Brotherhood once and for all.

Arriving back in a town she left behind a long time ago, Kirree Kennaugh does her best to protect the man she has always loved. It seems he’s becomes a target of the Brotherhood after crossing into forbidden territory and arresting two of their members. Determined to keep Rain safe, she will do whatever it takes to get the death sentence he faces – if the Brotherhood catch him – expunged.

Books containing inter-racial relationships never cease to draw me into them as you know the hero and heroine are going to have to overcome many obstacles to achieve their happy ever after. This book grabbed my attention from the very first chapter as Kirree deals with the fact that she’s back in a town she left behind a long time ago and thought she’d never return to, only to soon learn that Rain has incurred the wrath of the Brotherhood. Kirree is the sort of heroine that will quite possibly have a reader liking her from the moment she’s introduced. Well, she at least had a fan in this reader. She’s strong and brave. Her determination to confront the Brotherhood and possibly sacrifice her own future to protect Rain was one of the many things I liked about her. Since it wouldn’t have been easy to face that bunch of fanatics, whom believe they’re so much better than everyone else.

As for the dialogue, I loved that both the main characters never gave up on each other when it seemed so many people were against their relationship. It illustrated their love was worth fighting for. Also, the secondary characters added great entertainment, especially the ones willing to stand at Rain’s side. The scene where Rain asks Brody about his shooting skills and his reply was ‘Does a fish piss in the pond’ made me laugh. The sex scenes were scorching and I liked how persistent Kirree was in pursuit of an intimate relationship with Rain. Since there was so much love between them that deserved to be explored. What I liked so much about both characters was their determination to keep the other safe, even at the risk to their own personal safety.

Overall, this was a really good story that has me hoping that some of the secondary characters get stories of their own.

BLURB:
Though most consider him nothing more than a half-breed, Sheriff Rain-Runner Kiel is the only thing standing between the locals and the demonic sect known as the Brotherhood. All he’s ever wanted is to live in peace with Kirree, the woman he’s loved since childhood.

Kirree loves Rain more than anything, but the Brotherhood stands in the way. They are determined to force her to marry one of them. She’ll stay locked behind their walls, at the mercy of men who treat women as chattel.

Rain will do anything, even offer his life for hers, to put a stop to their nefarious plan.

Inside Scoop: Not for the faint of heart. The pain in this story is vivid, the emotions more so.

REVIEW: Winter of Thorns by Charlotte Boyett-Compo

Winter of Thorns
By: Charlotte Boyett-Compo
Release Date: March 6, 2015
Publisher: Ellora Cave
245 Pages

Marrying someone his prince has not approved of him to wed isn’t one of Lord Seyzon Montyne’s best plans, especially when his prince tends to punish those that go against his decree. However, what’s done is done until the prince arrives right as the ceremony is coming to an end and declares that Seyzon is to be sent to the dungeon on his wedding night for disobeying orders. But that’s not the worst of it. It seems the prince is determined to have his beautiful wife, Lady Jana Reynaud, by enforcing an ancient and legal right to do so.

Do you want to know something? This is the first Sci-Fi Romance I’ve ever read and I enjoyed it very much, considering the story was one where emotions run high and the hero and heroine face many obstacles before they achieve their happy ever after. The plot captivated my attention from the very beginning when Lady Jana comes to Lord Seyzon’s rescue and brings him back to health. It seems the phrase love at first sight really does exist. As for the dialogue, it was actually quite heartbreaking at times as the prince does his best to keep Jana and Seyzon apart. But for the moments they were together, I couldn’t help feel anything except rejoiced.

The sex scenes are quite explicit and you really feel for the heroine as she has no choice but to accept the prince’s right to a night in her bed. The worst thing is, she doesn’t want to enjoy it but finds herself unable to resist the fact that the prince gave her great satisfaction. However, in saying that, the love that Jana and Seyzon shared was so much stronger and their passion spilled over onto the pages perfectly to add incredible spice to the story.
Overall, this was a great book to introduce me to the Sci-Fi genre. There are so many plot twists that kept this reader totally absorbed in the story, but none more so than when the familial connection that exists between the prince and the lord was revealed. I would recommend it to fans of the Sci-Fi genre, but be warned; you may need some tissues close by just in case.

Locked in a dungeon on his wedding night, Seyzon must stand by helplessly as Vindan once again gets his way and takes Seyzon’s woman away with him.
