REVIEW: LAST FIRST KISS by SIDNEY HALSTON

Last First Kiss
Iron Clad Security #2
By Sidney Halston
Releasing August 29th, 2017
St Martins Press

He's an A-list Hollywood heartthrob.
She's trying to prove herself in a man's world.
For this female bodyguard, protecting her client is simply business, but what happens when sparks fly and the danger heats up?
After a series of box office flops, Rocco Monroe needs a hit. Bad press, shit talking, rumors, lies…it all goes with the territory after almost two decades in the spotlight, but when he lands the role of his career in a controversial biopic, the part of a lifetime comes with a catch: a hired bodyguard.
Annabelle Clad is so bored she wants to scream. Her life is coding and algorithms and binary codes…rinse and repeat. To her Rocco Monroe means freedom, a chance to show her overprotective brother and business partner that she can contribute to Iron Clad Securities. And no arrogant playboy will fuck up her concentration by batting his lashes at her. She would never jeopardize her reputation by swooning over any man.
That had happened once, and she wouldn’t bear that loss or humiliation ever again. Even if Rocco looks like a walking fantasy...

In Last First Kiss (Iron Clad Security #2) by Sidney Halston, all Annabelle Clad wants is the chance to prove to her brother that she can do just as good a job as a bodyguard than  any man. However, with her overprotective brother keeping refusing her plea for field work, she feels she'll never get the chance until potential client and movie star Rocco Monroe asks for her personally when she shows him that he shouldn't underestimate women. Yet, as Annabelle tries to do her best to avoid getting involved with Rocco anything more than as a professional, he's determined to perform to the best of his abilities in the biggest role of his career. But when things turn dangerous and Rocco finds his life threatened, Annabelle will do anything to protect him. Will she succeed in her first role as a bodyguard, or will she have to admit that her brother is right?

Any chance to read a book by Ms. Halston is an absolute delight, and I've got to say that this story is one of her best books yet. Really, it was highly entertaining due to the incredible main characters, especially the heroine, as her back story was heartbreaking and if anyone deserves love and happiness it's her after all she's been through; the dialogue was a wonderful combination of intense moments and playful banter between the main characters that had me smiling, laughing and close to tears; and the fast-paced storyline grabbed at my attention immediately because the heroine is determined to fight for her chance at playing bodyguard and isn't afraid to go head-to-head with her brother. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine meet where this story gets very interesting and had me smiling for the first time because of what Annabelle does to Rocco. Honestly, serves himself right!

As for the heroine, she's resilient, courageous and I liked that she finally told her brother all about what happened to her during her time in the military, which was something she needed to get off her chest if she was to ever heal from the emotional wounds of her past. I also liked how determined she was to resist Rocco, even though it's hopeless because their chemistry is powerful and it's palpable that he's determined to win her over with his charm. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine was how determined she was to protect the hero, even if it meant putting her own life in danger over and over.  While the hero, he's determined to be the best he can be as an actor because the role he's been given is the role of a lifetime and could do great things for his career, which is what he needs to bounce back after what happened with his last few films. I also liked that he wasn't afraid to give Annabelle a chance to be his bodyguard because he knows she'll do a good job of guarding him. Yet, what I liked most of all about the hero was his determination to win the heroine over. Certainly, he's arrogant and charming and hard to resist when he turns on the charm.

Overall, Ms. Halston has delivered an incredible read in this second book of her Iron Clad Security series where the chemistry between this couple was heady and convincing; the romance was hot and had me really liking these two together because no one is more deserving of happy ever after than Annabelle; and the ending had me worried for the main characters as the danger closes in, but left me completely satisfied as to how things worked out for this couple. I would recommend Last First Kiss by Sidney Halston, if you enjoy stories containing female bodyguards, movie star heroes, the opposites attract trope or books by authors K. Bromberg, Layla Hagen, Scarlett Cole and Cherrie Lynn.

Final Siege
Love over Duty #2
By Scarlett Cole
Releasing January 30th, 2018

IN THE LINE OF FIRE…

Former SEAL Malachai “Mac” MacCarrick is all about the future he’s created with his Navy brothers in Eagle Securities, taking assignments in the most dangerous places, and doing things no one but ex-military would attempt. But when an urgent phone call brings his troubled past—and the woman he once loved—into the present, it’s a chance to redeem himself that he can’t refuse.

STRAIGHT TO THE HEART…

An investigative journalist researching an explosive story, Delaney Shapiro tells herself she got over Mac—and his role in her brother’s death—a long time ago. But the first moment she sees him at her bedside in an overseas hospital, she knows it’s not true. Every moment together rekindles the desire that once burned between them, and now that she’s a target for an emerging Russian arms dealer, Mac won’t let her out of his sight. To protect her, he’ll risk it all—including his life…

In Final Siege (Love over Duty #2) by Scarlett Cole, Malachai 'Mac' MacCarrick has never gotten over Delaney Shapiro. So, when he receives an urgent phone call about her being in overseas hospital, he rushes to her bedside determined to protect her from whatever mess she's found herself in as a investigative journalist. He knows she's not going to give up on her story, but the deeper they dive into the investigation, the more danger Delaney finds herself in. Will Mac be able to keep her safe, or will they lose their second chance at forever after?

What an enthralling and fast-paced read Ms. Cole has delivered in this second book of her Love over Duty series that tugged at my heartstrings because of this couple's history that had me sympathizing with the both of them. Will Mac be able to make things right with the heroine? Will he finally give her the truth about what happened that fateful day that cost the life of someone they loved?

The way this story started had me hooked straight away, as Mac will do anything for Delaney, which is proven by the way he's there for her in her time of need, even though she isn't the most gracious of people that he's dropped everything for her. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine came face-to-face for the first time in this book that had me intrigued, as Mac is determined to win Delaney back, but she doesn't make things easy.

Both the main characters were fantastic and I loved every interaction between them, as the hero does his best to win the heroine over. Will Delaney ever be able to forgive Mac? Moreover, both the main characters back stories had me liking this pair too, as the loss they both suffered led them to the careers they have. Delaney being an investigative journalist is resilient, courageous, full of integrity and determined to only report the truth, which is proven by how far she's willing to go to get her latest story. What happened to her that landed her in an overseas hospital? I also liked how the heroine gave the hero a second chance, because they deserve to be happy and neither have been able to forget the other.

While the hero, he's honorable, confident in his skills s a former SEAL, and I liked how determined he was to protect the heroine from being hurt again, as she continues to investigate her story. I also liked the close friendship he shares with his two best friends and that his friends weren't afraid to offer their advice because they know how much Delaney has always meant to him. Yet, what I liked most of all about the hero was his determination to win the heroine over, even if it means breaking the promise he once made in order to make her understand what happened that fateful day that led to their break-up in the past.

Overall, Ms. Cole has delivered a wonderful read in this book where there was a perfect combination of suspense and romance; the chemistry between this couple was heady and convincing; the romance was hot and had me loving that the heroine gave the hero a second chance; and the ending had worried for one of the main characters because of the danger, but had me satisfied by how things worked out for the best for Mac and Delaney. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, because of what Delaney's achieved when it comes to her story and the fact that she and Mac are finally together again and happier than ever. I would recommend Final Siege by Scarlett Cole, if you enjoy romantic suspense, second chance romances, or books by authors Laura Griffin, AJ Nuest, Misty Evans and Kaylea Cross.

Half asleep, unwilling to fully waken and face the day, Delaney snuggled deep into the covers and allowed the dreams that danced on the edge of her consciousness to enter. In it, she was naked, in a large white bed, with a man behind her. A hand spanned her stomach, pulling her back against a firm, warm chest. Spooning. Her favorite thing.

Lazily, the hand moved upward until it cupped her breast, and Delaney secretly urged it to squeeze gently, but it didn’t. Whoever the hand belonged to was definitely aroused. She could feel the heavy erection pressing against her back. Teasingly, she wiggled her butt against him in the hope he’d get the message, but nothing. No response.

Sun shone in through large open windows with white billowing curtains as she reveled in feelings of being turned on.

She turned in the man’s arms, grateful when he pulled her closer to him. His chest was wide, with a light smattering of hair, and she pressed her forehead to it as she slid her hand between them to the waistband of his shorts.

A hand gripped her wrist. “Don’t,” a voice said gruffly. Hard to get? That was a new one. She moved closely and pressed a series of soft kisses to his chest. But she could be that girl. The one who was confident enough to initiate. She licked his nipple and heard him gasp.

“Delaney, please. Fuck. Wake up!”

Suddenly the bed shook. Covers were dragged off her body, and her skin was cold. Then the realization hit her.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

It wasn’t a dream.

Delaney forced one eye open and confirmed her worst nightmare. Mac stood naked, apart from a pair of basketball shorts and a huge erection. And if the tenting was to be believed, his chest and bicep dimensions weren’t the only muscles that had grown. His hair was ruffled, standing up every which way as it always used to, and his eyes told her that she’d woken him up. By attempting to grab his dick.

Dear God. She was going to die.

The tattoo across my right hip says it all really. A Life Less Ordinary. Inked by the amazingly talented Luke Wessman at the Wooster Street Social Club (a.k.a. New York Ink). Why is it important? Well, it sums up my view on life. That we should all aspire to live a life that is less boring, less predictable. Be bold, and do something amazing. I’ve made some crazy choices. I’ve been a car maker, a consultant, and even a senior executive at a large retailer running strategy. Born in England, spent time in the U.S. and Japan, before ending up in Canada were I met my own, personal hero – all six and a half feet of him. Both of us are scorpios! Yeah, I know! Should have checked the astrological signs earlier, but somehow it works for us. We have two amazing kids, who I either could never part with or could easily be convinced to sell on e-bay.

I’ve wanted to be a writer for a really long time. Check through my office cupboards or my computer and you’ll find half written stories and character descriptions everywhere. Now I'm getting the chance to follow that dream.

REVIEW: UNDER FIRE by SCARLETT COLE

Under Fire
Love over Duty #1
By Scarlett Cole
Releasing August 1st, 2017
St Martin's Press

In Under Fire (Love over Duty #1) by Scarlett Cole, Former SEAL Sixton 'Six' Rapp is now the owner along with his Navy "brothers" of a security firm that offer services from being a bodyguard to solving kidnapping cases. But when Dr. Louisa North, the intriguing woman he's recently met comes to him with a problem, Sixton finds it hard to turn her away, even though her problem isn't one the firm is equipped to handle just yet. Will Sixton and his brothers be able to help Louisa, or will the dangerous situation she finds herself being drawn into further stop the pair from achieving happy ever after?

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Cole, but it surely has me wanting to read more of her work, especially any books to come for this series, as the secondary characters in Six's Navy brothers were intriguing. They've been through so much together with many decisions for their career and future centred around honoring the death of a good friend. Is their decision to leave the military and start their own security firm the right decision?

As for the dialogue, it was well-written, compelling and I loved the combination of action and suspense, as Six is determined to help Louisa find out what's going on at the lab where she works and protect her from the people that want to hurt her for their own gain. Will Six be able to keep her safe? Will Louisa and Six be able to discover who the people are after her before things become too dangerous? Furthermore, the main characters had me completely fascinated by their back stories and their growing relationship, as the heroine finds it hard to be around people and interact with them. Yet, Six is different because he has his own worries in being in situations that take him back to his time in the military. I also like how resilient and courageous the heroine was in making sure the hero and his Navy brothers didn't shut her out in their investigation and that she challenged him to discover all she could to keep herself safe.

While the hero, he's done well for himself in his military career and I enjoyed learning all about his back story, which readers are introduced to right from the beginning. Leaving the military was the right decision for he and his friends, especially with what happened to them, and I liked how determined they were to succeed in their new endeavor of opening up a security firm. I also liked how confident the hero was in his ability to keep the heroine safe and how far he was willing to go for Louisa, because she's different to the women he normally goes for, which is something his friends need to realize.

Overall, Ms. Cole has delivered a thrilling and sizzling read in this book, which entertained me from start to finish due to the strong chemistry between this couple that brings them closer and closer together; a wonderful array of characters in both the main and secondary ones; intense dialogue that had me riveted and wanting to discover what the main characters would go through on their journey to happy ever after; and the ending which had me on the edge-of-my-seat, because of what the hero and heroine face. Will the bad guys win or will Six and Louisa come out on top? However, I liked how things turned out for this couple in the end and how far they've come in their relationship. I would recommend Under Fire by Scarlett Cole, if you enjoy romantic suspense or books by authors Rebecca Yarros, Cherrie Lynn, Kelly Elliott and Bella Jewel.

HE CAN TAKE THE HEAT.

Hot, hard-bodied Sixten Rapp is a former SEAL who’s raring to begin his brand-new civilian life. He and his Navy “brothers” start a security firm that offers the kind of services only a team of military-trained professionals can provide. But nothing prepared Six for his new client: an innocent woman on a mission to improve thousands of lives. . . unless someone takes hers first.

CAN SHE HANDLE THE FLAMES?

Dr. Louisa North knows time is against her as she tries to create a “miracle” medical treatment for a disease with no known cure, until she creates a sample so powerful that the wrong people want to use it as a chemical weapon. At first, Six is unwilling to accept Louisa as his client. But soon he realizes that the danger is real and that there’s much more to this plain-Jane scientist…including a burning passion between them that neither of them can resist. And now that an enemy is on Louisa’s trail, Six will do whatever it takes to protect her—or die trying.

BLOG TOUR - REVIEW: THE LEGEND by DONNA GRANT

The Legend
Sons of Texas #3
By: Donna Grant
Releasing June 27th, 2017
St. Martins Press

In The Legend (Sons of Texas #3) by Donna Grant, Callie Reed and Wyatt Loughman were once very close until Wyatt decided he couldn't stay in Texas after what happened to his mother and the blame he directed at his father. But now he's back and determined to protect Callie from the three factions gunning for him or his family and to keep a biological weapon from landing into the wrong hands. Will he be able to keep Callie safe, or will they lose their second chance at love?

Romantic suspense is my go-to when it comes to reading, and Ms. Grant pens the best stories with this series which take readers on a wild ride, as the main and secondary characters do their best to fight back against those that are coming after them. The way this story started had me sympathizing with the heroine, as her family are nothing but trouble that she's done her best to stay away from. Will they find a way to bring her back into the family fold in order to do what they want her to do? However, what I liked most about the beginning is how protective Wyatt is of Callie and that he would do anything to keep her family from getting to her.

The dialogue was well-written and so intense that I could not put this book down. Certainly, the plot twists, the action and the main characters made this story a thrilling and intriguing read and had me determined to discover what would happen next, as Wyatt and his family have to decide whether to take the fight to the bad guys or whether to wait for the bad guys to come after them. Will they come out on top over the bad guys? Will they discover information that will make them closer as a family?

As for the main characters, both are absolutely riveting due to their back stories, the history between them and all that they go through on their journey to happy ever after. Wyatt isn't sure whether he can give a relationship between them another chance, not when he's so consumed by things that happened in the past that he needs answers to before he can even consider what his future holds. Moreover, the heroine is strong, brave and I liked how determined she was to prove her worth and show Wyatt that she can help him in the fight when the bad guys come after them. I also liked that she was just as protective of Wyatt as he was of her. Then there's the fact that the heroine is really good at getting any information they need, which is proven when the pair need to choose who they can trust.

While Wyatt, he's been through so much in his life and has always felt disconnected from his family, because of the blame he placed on his father after what happened to his mother. However, in saying that, he's beginning to find his way back to his family and he has some big decisions to make as this story progresses. Will he be able to forgive his dad? Will he give a relationship between him and Callie another chance? Yet, what I liked most about the hero was how protective he was of Callie, especially in the moment where trouble finds them; trouble that had me on the edge-of-my-seat because it seemed Wyatt and Callie were outnumbered.

Overall, Ms. Grant has penned another sensational read in this action-packed and suspenseful third book of her Sons of Texas series where the main characters chemistry was powerful, the romance totally hot and the ending had me concerned for Wyatt and Callie, as they fight for their survival and hopefully get the answers they need to something that has bothered the hero for years. However, what I liked most about the ending is how Wyatt convinces Callie of how much he wants her in his life and then how the Loughman family and their allies all decide what they're going to do when it comes to the threats they know are going to keep coming unless they find a way to end things once and for all and make sure that the biological weapon doesn't end up in the wrong hands. I would recommend The Legend by Donna Grant, if you enjoy romantic suspense, second chance romances, or books by authors Maya Banks, Alexandra Ivy, Katie Reus or Monica McCarty.
