In The Baby Bombshell (Shadow Creek, Montana #2) by Victoria James, Jack Bailey broke Lily Cookson's heart when he called off their engagement and left town after losing his twin brother and nephew in an accident. But now he's back in Shadow Creek, determined to win Lily back. However, he soon discovers he isn't going to have the easiest time doing that, especially when Lily isn't willing to give him the time of the day. Yet, when she learns she's pregnant after they spend one night together, will the past repeat itself or will Jack prove how much he wants a second chance at love, family, happiness?

What an engaging and heartwarming second chance romance Ms. James has penned in this story, which tugged at my heart-strings and didn't disappoint. The way this story started with the prologue sets the fast-pace of this story, and made me determined to discover more about Jack, what he's gone through in the time he's been away and what happened to make him run instead of allowing those that love him to help him through his grief. However, it was moment he comes face-to-face with Lily again that made this story really intriguing. Would Lily give him the time of day to explain why he needed to leave Shadow Creek when he did?

With this being a story about second chances, healing and finding forgiveness, both the main characters are incredible. Jack is determined to win back Lily's trust by doing everything he can to prove he won't leave again while Lily is determined not to let him back into her life until the moment where she feels she has no choice. It's hard on both sides, because they have so much chemistry, but the fact that Jack left at a time when he needed those he loves most has made Lily bitter. How does she know that if she gives Jack another chance that he won't leave if the going gets tough and he can't handle it?

Jack faces a tough challenge in getting Lily to listen, but I liked that he didn't give up, no matter how stubborn she was. I also felt sorry for him, because he has so much guilt over what happened to his brother and the fact that he left town after his twin and nephew died. How can he make it up to his family and Lily? Will he be able to? How will he finally be able to let go of the past, so that he can have a future with Lily? While Lily, I could understand why she's bitter and unwilling to give Jack another chance. Not only because of the fact that he deserted her, but because of the secret she's keeping. I also liked the adventure she's about to embark on with her best friend, because their business is no doubt going to be a success.

Moreover, I liked how the secondary characters in Jack's family aren't afraid to give their advice on how they believe Jack and Lily are a meant-to-be couple and that they shouldn't let anything stand in the way of them being together again. Yet, in saying that, I could understand why Jack's sister was so torn, because Lily is also her best friend and after what Lily went through when Jack left, it isn't easy to forgive him.

Overall, just like all of Ms. James's books, this story was a worthwhile read that has me looking forward to more of this series, especially with what was revealed in the epilogue about a muffin man. The way this story ended had me worried for the main characters because of what they go through. Luckily, Jack is there for Lily when she needs him most and I loved the words Lily said to the hero in the epilogue, because they're definitely a couple meant-to-be. I would highly recommend The Baby Bombshell by Victoria James, especially if you enjoy the surprise pregnancy trope, second chance romances; or sweet reads where the couple are meant-to-be, no matter what they have to face on their journey to happy ever after.

OVERALL RATING:

BLURB:
Lily Cookson has a few rules for the New Year, the most important being don't fall for Jack Bailey. The gorgeous, rugged man returned with a new look and a determination to win her back, catching her off guard. After a forbidden night in his arms, she vows never to let it happen again. But when morning sickness kicks in a few weeks later, Lily realizes staying away from Jack just got a whole lot harder.

Jack Bailey left Shadow Creek behind five years ago when his world imploded around him, knowing it would be best for everyone if he was gone...including Lily. It took him a long time to get his life back on track and grow into the kind of man she needs him to be. Now he's determined to prove to Lily that he's back for good and ready to commit, but the secrets she's holding onto are nothing compared to the bombshell he drops…
