In Dangerous Minds (Knight & Moon #2) by Janet Evanovich, Emerson Knight can't help himself when someone asks for his help, and when Buddhist monk Wayan Bagus comes to him with a crazy story that his island has gone missing, Emerson decides to investigate. However, he can't do it without the aid of Riley Moon and his childhood partner in crime, Vernon. Will Emerson and Riley be able to find the truth, or will the bad guys make sure the truth never comes out?
My introduction to Ms. Evanovich's superb writing was her Stephanie Plum novels, but I've come to love everything she's penned, and this series totally makes me laugh. As Emerson is so eccentric and determined in his quest to solve a mystery that seems so unsolvable, and yet, he doesn't give up no matter what dangers he, Riley and Vernon face and make readers concerned that they may not be able to get out of.
As for the dialogue, it was intense due to what the bad guys were willing to do to keep Emerson and Riley from discovering the truth and telling others, which had me a tad scared for the pair, especially because Emerson is good at convincing Riley to go into a situation she'd much rather avoid. However, I loved learning all about volcanoes, flumes, and strange matter; topics I don't know much about, but found fascinating. Furthermore, I loved the teasing banter between Riley and Emerson as well as between the main and secondary characters, as Vernon has had an interesting past.
Both Emerson and Riley are brilliant characters and every moment they converse shows off their wonderful chemistry. Emerson loves to tease Riley, which is always fun, because it's a wait-and-read game whether she's going to be able to handle his teasing or take offence. Furthermore, Riley is strong and brave the way she faces everything thrown at her, which is proven by what she does to escape the dangerous situations she finds herself in. I also liked that she was willing to help Emerson, even when it's palpable she would rather run in the opposite direction away from him. While Emerson, he continues to impress me with his determination to solve a mystery that seems improbable to find the answers to. I also liked how persuasive he can be when it comes to convincing others to go along with his plans, even though they know what Emerson wants to do wouldn't be a good ide since the hero tends to lead them into dangerous situations.
Overall, Ms. Evanovich has penned another really good read for this series, which takes readers on a thrill ride of mystery and danger that had me on the edge-of-my-seat because of the trouble Emerson, Riley and Vernon find themselves in. However, in saying that, I loved the way this story ended due to the danger this mismatched trio face and what they learn about a 100-year-old conspiracy. I would recommend Dangerous Minds by Janet Evanovich, if you enjoy a good mystery novel or books by authors Stephanie Bond, Sue Grafton, Kathy Reichs and Linda Fairstein.
