In Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (Oregon Wine Country #3) by Heather Heyford, as a psychotherapist, Sophia 'Red' McDonald is used to people opening up to her about their problems, but the handsome Sam Owens is a tough nut to crack. Instead, he uses sex as a defence mechanism, but now Sophia is determined to put her foot down, especially since she wants their secret friends-with-benefits arrangement to be so much more. Will Sam agree with Sophia's desire to change the status quo of their secret relationship, so everyone knows they're together; or will his past demons keep the pair from achieving the happy ever after they both deserve?

This story had its ups and downs for me, which made it difficult for me to choose what overall star rating I was going to give this story, because I really liked the hero and his back story, but the heroine frustrated me at times with her pushiness and need to get the hero to open up about his past before he was ready as well as her desire to have the home she's always wanted. Why couldn't she respect Sam's decisions? The way this story started had me liking the hero immediately, as it's palpable relationships aren't his thing, even though he and Sophia are friends with benefits. Will he finally realize how good relationships can be?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters backs stories, which had me sympathizing with both of them because they didn't have the best childhoods. It was also intense because of what the hero is going through with his father and what happens to the hero's childhood home that puts Sam at odds with Sophia. Moreover, the heroine was sassy, determined and I liked how she didn't give up on the hero, even though he gave her every reason to give up on him. I also liked how kind and caring the heroine was and that she would do anything for her Gran; a woman that has been there for Sophia through thick and thin. While the hero, I could understand why he's so closed off when it comes to his family and not wanting to talk about his past; a past that includes doing some rather questionable things as a military officer. I also liked how loyal the hero was and the tight bond he shares with his friend, Manolo. He's the one person that can understand all that Sam has bees through. Yet, what I liked of all about the hero is his determination to open up to the heroine once he realizes she isn't about to give up on knowing what he's keeping to himself.

Overall, Ms. Heyford has penned a good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong and had me hoping this couple would figure out how much they need each other to heal from their pasts. The way this story ended had me sympathizing with the heroine after what the hero does. Yet, in saying that, I liked how Sam made things right with Sophia, as they're a couple meant to be, no matter how many obstacles they have to overcome to be together. I would recommend Kisses Sweeter than Wine by Heather Heyford, if you enjoy the friends to lovers trope, or books by authors Marina Adair, Pamela Gibson, Anna J. Stewart and Donna Kauffman.

When the town of Clarkston, Oregon, welcomes Captain Sam Owens home from the service, Sophia “Red” McDonald is first in line. The sassy psychotherapist has known Sam since they were kids, and the grown-up Sam is darned near irresistible. With his abs of steel and those gorgeous hazel eyes, he could have any woman he wanted. Naturally, Red is thrilled when he takes her hand . . .

She’s a modern woman, happy to canoodle with the sexy soldier, no strings attached—until her heart changes the rules. Suddenly, after months of casual hookups, Red finds she wants more. She longs to possess Sam body and soul. But his warrior's heart was wounded long before he joined the service. As a therapist, Red has ways of making him talk. Only if Sam opens up and spills his secrets can they finally have everything their hearts desire . . .
